Absolute Cheapest Place to Stay a Few Nights and Travel Overseas

I have always wondered this. Say you had a week to stay at the cheapest most affordable place in the world overseas where would it be?

My guess is somewhere in Asia or the middle east.

Comments

  • South East Asia, or you could do Bali (as long as you don't stay near the beach)

    Or

There's a deal on tripadeal that I saw "2 for 1 China", which includes:
Return flights for 2 on Qantas
    8 nights accommodation
    For $2k

    • I managed to score a Groupon for a hotel in Legian, was maybe 2-300 meters from the beach. Got 7 days with breakfast for under $300.

  • SE Asia is generally pretty cheap.
I can't see the Middle East being cheap to get to from Australia, although I could be wrong?

    • Oh I was thinking accommodation wise. Yeah I have no clue really with most travel prices. Still a newb at this.

I stayed in a hotel in Egypt once for about $6.00 a night.

      • Unless your going to Syria which will likely be free, the UAE and the other Oil rich states are shit expensive !!!

        • Sorry I just read this guys article so I thought it might be possible on the to do cheap list.

A lot of it does sound kind of fairy tale ish though haha.

        • @AlienC:

Actually your right, I was only making reference to places like Dubai/Qatar/Abu Dhabi. They are exxy, but places on that list are fine.

        • @TheBilly: yeah oh don't worry I know about most of the Singapore's of the world.. expensive cities.. just trying to find the valuable Ozbargain travel destinations of the world.

I think Iran is ok now right but much fighting happening there or is there still conflict.

        • @AlienC:

No Iran is all good currently. Its more media hype. Just be smart i.e. stay in a safe place, dont go being to adventurous, just common sense. Respect the laws etc. Do research before going and just follow others experiences

  • Including airfare or not? A SEA country like VN, LA, KH, or ID would be in the running. Even CN not in a big city would have a chance.

    • Including everything.. taking everything into consideration what would be the absolute cheapest place to go.. aside from my fish and chips shop down the road. Only man power needed.

      • Have you considered Albury or Wodonga? Maybe Bundaberg?

        • Honestly open to any suggestions as long as the place isn't like too notorious for anything too dangerous or illegal and even then that's part of the thrill of the ride right?

        • @AlienC:
Well, might as well rule out Albury, Wodonga and Bundaberg then….

        • @Drew22: why what's down there.. can't be that bad can it as say Blacktown or auburn.

  • You can get very cheap and commensurately dingy accommodation in Vegas.

  • We stayed at a nice hotel in Nha Trang in VN for $17 for a double.
Las Vegas is likely he cheapest 5 star with $50 possible, but that was some years ago.
Otherwise, a 'fan only' room in guesthouse in rural Indonesia or Vietnam is under $6, maybe under $3.

    • Any tips for traveling to Vietnam?

It is a great budget destination with world class historical, cultural, culinary and natural attractions.
We found it an easy travel place, with plenty of people speaking a bit of English.
I liked HCMC and Hanoi, although they have different personalities, but Hoi Ann was lovely, if you can accept it is a tourist trap, it is a beautiful one.
Ha Long Bay was wonderful, but I feel they lack reasonable priced 3 star options. Everything is 5 star expensive or backpacker drunken budget cheap.
We were there for 3 weeks and travelled south to north by train. That was fun too.

  • Vang Vieng in Laos. USD6 per night. Room was not the best but most people went to float down the river in tubes while high a hallucinogenic beverages.

    • Not gonna lie that sounds pretty bomb but the feeling of being trapped in something on water may terrify me especially in somewhere like Vietnam

      • Laos ≠ Vietnam

        • Dammit brain not working Herr derr

          @AlienC:

          Same same but different.

Honestly it was good fun while it lasted. Quite a few people drowned especially when the river was flooded and the Laotian govnt closed the whole scene down because it was getting out of control.

If you are really serious about getting some cheap travel you can't beat SE Asia. Just don't do stupid sh*t like:

          • Mess with drugs
          • Ride on a motorcycle (negates your travel insurance)
          • Mention the King (in Thailand)

$25 gets you a semi decent hotel room in Bangkok. $2 gets you a 700ml chang beer in a 7/11. Maybe $3 for a cheap meal.

Otherwise I would try South America. It is way easier to learn the basics of Spanish (as I have) but I've not been so others would have to weigh in

@Icecold5000: Agree Bangkok. Fly AirAsia on Sale return from Sydney $360.

        • Just for the record, riding on a motorcycle does NOT negate you travel insurance. It only does if:
          1. You don't have an Australian motorcycle licence
          2. You have drugs or alcohol in your body
          3. You are not wearing a helmet.

Which basically means over 90% of Australian tourists are not covered.

  • eastern europe, you can live like a king for $100 a day.

    • Please do tell me more senpai.

      • I'd probably start with prague, krakow, budapest, then work your way south east. Cheap everything, some of the cities can be a little expensive in the touristy areas. Go see my man Fables in Budapest, he'll sort you out.

      Balkans is way more cheaper!

I want to play your game but you should set some rules first (other than the the price of getting there not being important).

For example, are we excluding ashrams and all those off-beat places that let you stay for free?

Are you including tents and shared accommodation? Hot water optional? Wi-fi? Hygeine requirements?

The cheapest accommodation I've experienced would have to be India.

The cheapest private room I've had was in Jaisalmer, where you can still pay only 50 rupees for a double bed (the cheapest I saw just now on booking.com was 45 rupees or 90 cents - https://www.booking.com/hotel/in/dreamjaisalmer-guest-house.…). Every hotel when I was there booking in person tried to break my balls into going on a tour (or they charge you double the price for a room!).

I didn't try to get shared accommodation in Jaisalmer, but it's available for 30 rupees (less than 60 cents) on booking.com if you want it (e.g. https://www.booking.com/hotel/in/fotiya-guest-house.html?aid…). You might find cheaper if you book direct in low season and/or sleep on a rooftop (like I did in Goa), but I'm not familiar with the going rate these days.

Ironically, I think the best value non-vegetarian Indian food would be somewhere in Malaysia. Somewhere in South Asia would probably win for "cheapest meal regardless of quality" (which would probably be vegetarian).

    • I mean well I guess I don't want to sleep on like a street or on a dirty floor but I also don't want to sleep like on a mansion.

I guess somewhere with a comfortable enough single or double bed for one person that you would be safe sleeping on or maybe buying a throwaway blanket and pillow and a mattress cover for the entire stay and maybe a nice warm shower or two.. WiFi I guess is optional but if I do plan to travel I would probably rather bring a mobile plan and some extra power banks to last me the entire stay.. don't trust non-Australian electrical systems especially in the places where I will probably staying.. even sketchy of maybe even US or first world Europe.

Ideally I would maybe like to try visit a set place for maybe a week or few days then maybe move on to my next destination.

With the hot water I guess if it is already hot then cold alone is just fine.. I remember it being really hot one time in Malaysia and just using cold water.

      • TL;DR clean sheets and a cool shower is already ten times better than what I am sometimes living today haha lol.. I'm not too picky just give me a livable arrangement and I'll take it.

  • The airport

      Good movie.

  • Kangaroo Island sleeping bag on beach = 0.00

    • Is it warm over there right now because that honestly sounds like a treat.. maybe bring a tent.
