Full Time Working Parents Seek Advice about Child Care Rebate

Dear OZ Bargainers,

Hope all are doing well.

My question is regarding child care rebate.

Me and my wife are working full time and our baby is currently enrolled in 5 days for the child care.

Questions:

  1. Am I understanding correctly that after a certain number of weeks we will not be entitled for 50% of the rebate?
  2. How many weeks this 50% will be covered till?
  3. What does other fellow members do in such situation? Except for the idea of working from home / working part time etc.,?

Appreciate all the inputs that I could get from this community as this will help to plan for our baby.

By the way, our preference is for our baby to be able to get maximum time from child care though this adds the problem of him getting sick regularly - we prefer this as his growth on learning has been great. Thank you!

I think the max is $7500pa.

If you or your partner worked from home would you then remove your child from care? Because you'd likely lose your spot.

As I understand it, you need to make up the financial difference.

Yep, after the $7500 you stop receiving the rebate until the next financial year. My partner and I now work 4 x 10hr days so that we only use child care 3 days a week but that's not an option for everyone.

Not weeks, but once you have claimed about $7500 per kid per financial year, the rebate dries up.

  • Say fees were $200/week. The government would cover $100/week. After 37.5 weeks, you would hit the threshold, so for the remaining 14.5 weeks of the FY, you would pay the full price.

A new scheme coming into effect on July 2018. All depends on your family income but should be an improvement.

  • They are getting rid of the $7500 cap with the new scheme; if I remember correctly.

    • So what does that mean - we don't have to worry about this 7,500$ limit and it will be applicable for the year throughout?

      • I think it means there is no cap on the govt contribution.
