Help with Wireless Router to AP

Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a way to make my old router N300 - NF12 into AP. Wifi is very weak at back and the opposite side of the garage. I've D-link 2890AL connected to FTTP in garage. I've data point in every room connected by switch and patch panel.
My connection is this:
NBN—> 2890—> netgear 8 port switch—> hills home's data patch panel

I would like to put N300 in the room at the back to the house so every corner of the house is covered. how do i do it?

I would connect the N300 to a laptop if you have (by Ethernet wire connection preferably) and connect to the web control panel. (only plug in the laptop, don't worry about the main router for now, you'll need to configure the N300.)

The configuration changes you'll need to do are:

    • You'll need to find a setting that changes the device's IP, somewhere around LAN Settings. So if your main router's IP is 192.168.0.1, you'll change the N300 to 192.168.0.2 for example. same subnet mask aswell. (This is so you can access the router even if you're connected by another wireless or ethernet connection in the same network)

    • You'll also need to disable DHCP Server and Firewall on the N300, since your main router is doing that job as well as to avoid conflict.

    • You can also change your WiFi Settings to match your main one with the same SSID and preshared passphrase. (recommended)

After those changes, you'll need to unplug the laptop and move the N300 to the garage and connect an ethernet wire between the wall panel and LAN1 port of the N300. The wireless router will now act as an switch and an AP.

    • Thank you Purec!

move the N300 to the garage and connect an ethernet wire between the wall panel and LAN1 port of the N300.

What I wanted is to put N300 in the room not in the garage. Is it possible? As I already have 2890 AL modem router connected to a switch and patch panel

      • You can put it in any room you like as long as you can connect the N300 to a switch that's connected to the main router so you can get internet access. :)
