Cheapest Car Hire for under 25?

Hi all,

Going to tassie for 8 days starting next week and wondering what the cheapest hire car company is for an under 25???

Any tips/ideas for things to do? Going to Bruny Island for 2 nights and the rest based in Hobart.

Thanks,

  • I am 24 if that changes anything

as long as you are over 16 then every thing is fine.

  • Assuming you have a full license? Try sixt and then the usual suspects(Herz, Europcar, Avis etc)

You're under 25 so you might have to pay a surcharge and they might force you to purchase their insurance.

Apex only charges under 21's extra. I find their zero excess packages are often cheaper than the usual suspects (Thrifty, Hertz, etc.). Only issue being that you'll only be able to pick up and drop off in Hobart or Launceston.

Thanks Master Bator!! I was going nuts checking a hundred different sites, Apex were by far the cheapest including their zero excess. Good stuff, all booked!

  • Carhood?

  • Sorry for the bad news, but according to their website you are not permitted to drive on Bruny Island.

Where can't I drive an Apex Australia rental vehicle?
Please refer to the Apex Australia Geographical Restrictions map for full details. Apex Australia vehicles must only be used on a road which is properly formed and constructed as a sealed, metalled or gravel road. Vehicles are not permitted to be taken to:
    ….Bruny Island (Tasmania)…..
On beaches or through streams, dams, rivers or flood waters.

Bruny is notorious for some rental companies either requiring waivers or not permitting you to drive at all.

Edit : It seems you can obtain 'permission in writing' to go to Bruny, I would be asking!

    • Have just sent an email asking for permission. Will report back results.

      • I'd be interested, thanks :)

        • They are fine with it, they sent me a waiver which basically said they're not responsible for any loss incurred due to the car breaking down on the island (e.g. missing your ferry and therefore flight home).

The day is saved. Thanks for bringing this to my attention…

        • That is awesome news! Have a ball on your holiday :)

  • You could perhaps save quite a bit of money on the optional car insurance if you purchase domeestic travel insurance that covers car rental excesses. Of course be careful to read the terms and conditions. I'd recommend looking at Allianz travel insurance to begin with.

Your spot on Presence, I paid alliance $100 for a week of insurance in Qld. flights, acommadation, hire car excess all covered for 2 of us . Better than paying $25 plus/day to hire company. I tell anyone i can about this.

  • $25 is a pretty low budget for car hire

    • op means u25 years of age :)

  • When I went we used Bargain Car Rentals solely for the fact that they allowed them to go to Bruny Island. No issues with the car/company at all.

Plenty of people took rental cars from companies that don't allow it over though, I personally wouldn't risk it. There are plenty of day trips from Hobart that go there too, if there are only a few things on Bruny you wanted to see I would see if any of these work and not drive at all, most of the things can easily be done in a day as they are along the main road on the island.

  • What about Wicked - http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/campervan-hire-locations/tas…
They have an online booking so you could see how much it costs..I'm pretty sure they'd probably be fine with Bruny.

Burny is awesome place..Love it there as it's so peaceful. Lots of beaches to just hang out at…There is also the sea life tours (those are awesome)..There is also Bruny Island Cheese/Beer place (there beers are great if you like beer).

Hobart..Well there is Mona, there is Salamanca, North Hobart where all the good food/restos are at, guess there is Mt.Wellington if you're interested…There is the Huon that has the Apple Shed and various other places to stop off at further down the ways..There is the Airwalk down at Tahune Airwalk (if you want to travel further out of Hobart). There is bush walking around various areas near below the mountain. It really depends on what you want to do.

    • As mentioned above, Apex are fine with Bruny if you sign a waiver.

Thanks for the tips though. Just what I was looking for! We are staying on Bruny for 2 nights so we will definitely check out a couple of your suggestions. Beer and cheese sounds amazing.

Just 2 days of work left then i'll be throwing back oysters.

  • beware the standard $4000 excesses on most hire cars
