Waiving Credit Card Fees?

For the past 8 years my Frequent Flyer Gold Visa fee has been waived due to having a mortgage with the bank. As with most people who have a loan offset account I paid everything with my card and paid the card in full by the due date.

In November my loan will be officially closed and therefore the card will cost me money.

Any experiences here with having your fees waived either by initiating it yourself or being offered by the bank for what ever reason?

May be the same goes with Account Keeping fees I guess. Currently waived but will be $5 per month as of next month. This one is easy because NAB and others offer transaction accounts with no fees.

Cheers, Rick.

  • I have never paid the fees each year i call up and tell them i want to cancel
and they give it to me for free again been doing it for the past 8 years on my current cards inc the one that gives me a free flight a year other wise they would be costing me about $1000 ayear .I do pay most things on the cards ( for the points ) and pay each month in full

    • Do you mind if asking if this card is an Amex?

      • citibank do this for me, they waive the fee on my bp mastercard everytime i call up to cancel

        • Did that many years before. Found it too much trouble and betrayed my honesty, now sticks with the Woolswoth everyday Money CC.

      • yes the others are bankwest and westpac all top end points cards

  • Why not just switch providers? There are some no annual fee cards out there. Do some shopping.

    • there aren't many providers out there that gives decent points for FF unfortunately.

i am now with westpac because the last time i tried to dial up to waive my anz one, they turned me down.. so took my business elsewhere. Not to mention I always get spam calls from ANZ to get me to sign up to their credit insurances which is BS.

    • I figured out that I would hardly get any sort of reward points to make those kind of cards worthwhile so I'm just interested in no annual fees, since I pay in full every month. Maybe for some other people it might be worthwhile.

  • Has anyone ever tried to waive the fee for Wollies Everydaymoney CC ?

    • yes first year they agreed according to my spend. however this year no my sepnd is low so they only offered to reduce it by 50%. im going to call up again this week before its due and cancel it if they dont agree to waive in in full or do a product transfer to their new qantas ff rewards card for free. any advice on what to say to get it waived in full?

      • I emailed them few months ago and they said 'NO'..

  • Getting waivers for annual credit card fees is common these days, don't even need to threaten to close account/switch account/have existing or big relationship with the bank etc. Just call up ask.

See here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32961 for my experience with the David Jones Amex card, NAB Velocity card, and also getting Bankwest to waive an overdue credit card payment fee of $35.
