Another Help me build a PC thread

Hi Guys,

I know, I know, another help me build thread. But I legitimately would like peoples opinions and I know people love to give them :)

My Bro in law has recently tried to play PUBG on his 6 year old dual core / Radeon 7850 PC, and much to his dismay, It runs terribly!
So he has given me about $1000 to get him up to spec.

I'm not partial to any side so I was thinking the best Ryzen CPU I can buy (one that should hopefully last him 5-6 years)
And a mid range GPU - Since they are so expensive atm.

So Hit me up with your best builds!
So Far I am looking at

CPU Ryzen 5 1600 - $260
GTX 1060 3GB - $260
And $500 for whatever is left over - Motherboard, Maybe some Ram. He already has a Case and Power supply.

Do you think its worth looking at R5 1700 or even Ryzen 7 or is it too expensive?

Just wanting people opinions on the best Bang for buck future proof CPU, or do you think I should spend more on the GPU?

For gaming, an R5 1600 will get you pretty much the same performance as a R7 1700. Unless your brother does productivity work like encoding, I would throw any spare cash into a GPU upgrade. The 1600 is already the best value future-proof CPU on the market.

    • Thats my thinking but the next level 1070 at its lowest price still well above $600 which is most of the budget gone already.

And no, he doesnt do anything but game. a 1700 Wont get a little bit of extra performance 4 years downt he track for gaming - say %10?

Psu… As they age the fail rate go's up, you don't want it to pike your bros PC…

      • Eh… maybe, hard to say with these things. Most games right now are written for 4-8 threads, and the 1600 has 12. Some future games may utilise 13+ threads, but I suspect many will not. If you're looking to future-proof, maybe get the 1060 6GB instead (if you can find it at a good price, that is)? It's faster than the 3GB variant right now and that gap will probably widen a bit over time. As the other replier said, you may also want to look into getting a new PSU, depending on what model PSU you're currently using.

Ive been trying to decide myself between Ryzen 1600 or spending $115 more for Ryzen 1700 for days now.
but for you it's an easy choice go Ryzen 1600.

The single core on Ryzen 1600 is slightly higher than Ryzen 1700 so FPS will be the same as each other.
Multicore on Ryzen 1600 already beats the I7 7700K and isnt to far behind Ryzen 1700 so this isn't a worry unless you can justify spending the extra but as you state this is only for gaming.

EDIT: i just bought this motherboard for $116 useing the code. still decideing on CPU lol

    • Why did you decide on that motherboard?

      Its a good price. Overclockable?

      • All B350 and x370 Motherboards are overclockable though higher end x370 ones are ofc going to be better overclockers.

        Cheap has everything i need
6 sata 3 ports lots of the cheap ones like this only has 4
Full ATX form factor so it has plenty of PCI express slots for my WIFI card and USB expansion card without worrying about my GPU getting in the way of PCI express slot on a Micro ATX.

That's my main needs really no need to overspend on looks like more expensive B350 Motherboards.

  • I usually whack together an i5 with a gtx 760 with 8gb ram for a budget gaming rig, use recycled case/psu and ram if you can. Plays Fallout 4 and Borderlands 2 (surprisingly heavy on the resources game, my benchmarking game).

Upon prior OzB recommendations, I went for a secondhand Dell Optiplex 9010:

    • 8Gb RAM
    • 256Gb SSD
    • i7 3770
    • SFF (I like me a sleek compact case!)
for $400, minus the eBay 10% dealio to $360.

And then I dropped in a low profile GTX 1050 Ti (one that doesn't use external power). $220 inc discount.

That's under $600 for a decent G-sync capable build; leaving the rest for a -quality- monitor, which will actually be the most used part of the whole system.

Considering that 90% of my computer time is Youtube or OzBargain, then I need to make sure I'm not straining to read all those Xiaomi deals!

  • I am in the same boat currently

My Phenom II is now lagging and not keeping up with my needs

I am thinking to get Ryzen 1600 or 1700x.

I mainly use my computer for Photoediting (photoshop and Lightroom)
    What do you guys suggest?

I already have SSD for OS !

    Sorry for hijacking thread :|

Well. It depends on your type of workflow. Not all tasks done in PS and LR are multi-threaded — some are single thread and don't fully use all six cores and some do use whatever you give it.

This tests will explain which CPU's are best for lightroom and they compare Core i7 (Quad cores) with Ryzen 7 (8 cores). In some workloads the Intel quads performed better. But Intel CPU's and their accompanying motherboards are often more expensive.

If you do video editing in Premiere, or do transcodes in Handbrake, more cores is better. I use Handbrake on a 1600x system and it's all about cores, cores, cores.

      • Thanks mate, question about RAM though.

I was watching videos comparing baseclock 2133mhz with 3200-4200mhz ones and the gains were about 4-5 % . what do you suggest there?

        • +1

Buy whatever is good value, keeping in mind the rule of diminishing returns the higher you go…

RAM being expensive, there isn't actually much price difference between 2133mhz and 2400mhz memory, so it would be wiser to just buy 2400,

since you would get perhaps 4% performance increase for 0% increase in price. That makes sense.

But 3200mhz RAM would only get you another 10% perf increase for 20%+ increase in price, so you can see how the value diminishes.

        • @scrimshaw: makes perfect sense. Thank you for that.

I already ordered Ryzen 5 1600 and Motherboard.

  • I'd go for a G4560 (when/if it comes back in stock.) + 1060/1070 build. I drafted up a Ryzen 3 build for a mate, with a GTX 1060 it came to around ~700. G4560 is half the price of a Ryzen 3 and ~ the same performance, for gaming it'll be the graphics card that bottleneck, not the CPU. Ryzen is pretty memory sensitive, going from DDR4 2400 to 3200 is a pretty big upgrade, but with current price of RAM that might push it over the 1k budget

    • With the 20% deal I got

      ryzen 1600
      1080 3gb
      Modular Corsair CPU 650
      8GB 2400 MHZ DDR4 Ram
      an Asus Rock Mobo
      120 GB SSD

      For $916
      Delivered from Futu ebay.

I could of maybe shaved a few more dollars off by shopping around but I figured just get them from the 1 store and theyre all delivered at once.

Also splashd out on some things like the Modular PSU which I find really useful for cable management and an SSD for $76 or whatever it was. Didnt need a new SSD but windows will load a lot faster on that then the old standard HD.

I did similar thing by buying parts from futu online
        Ebay 20% off sale:

        Ryzen 3 1600 $260
        Asrock A320M $80
        16GB Corsair 3200mhz RAM DDR4 $208

        Total = $548

I already have Intel 535 SSD 240GB, GPU and Coolermaster extreme 750 power supply

I am not going to Overclock my workstation so chose the A320 chipset.

I will report back once everything arrives
