I'll stay out of 'the referral loop', but mention that friends (who don't even drink much but were appalled)went to the Maldives, and were not permitted to take any alcohol in with them - to the point of baggage being x-rayed, with any alcohol being 'bonded' until you are leaving - if you declared it. BUT you can buy drinks at nearly all resorts if you're prepared to pay far higher mark-ups than even Sydney's licensed restaurants. This last comment is probably worth a separate forum topic. We recently returned from months in France, and while everything except phone booths is licensed, mark-ups in quite good restaurants was often less than 50% - unlike Sydney, where I've seen many at 300%+.
