Opinions on NOS Gigabyte P57W-970-601S 17.3" gaming laptop

Any opinions welcome… https://www.mwave.com.au/product/gigabyte-p57w970601s-173-ga…

I know its not available at MW but its a good link to the system, I can still get one new. Whats your opinion of this for under $1400. Price is important, do not want to spend more. 17" screen is nice, full HQ i7 instead of U model is too. Probably will put in an ssd. Not really going to be gaming as I rarely do now, and couldmt even tell you what the latest games were just to give an idea of how important gaming actually is.

Just want something nice and grunty. Trying to cross compare 1050, and 960 cards seems to suggest the older one is better in places. But a 1060 is significantly better than the 970M. But those systems 1060 are $1,000 more. I would settle on HQ i5 too if price was better, or SSD was included, 16 gig ram etc. Can drop to 15 inch screen, but needs to be a lot of system to warrant it IMO (Im kind of liking the 17). I think Id prefer 17" 6th gen to 15" 7th gen.

Not wanting tablets, or little screens etc. Its just not my thing. Not a student, wont be carrying it all over the place but do want portability so small size/weight isnt critical to me.

    I have a Lenovo E570P with GTX 1050 Ti (2GB) and KabyLake Core i7 HQ. Could run 3dMark on it and tell you the scores and help you compare, if you want.

    Probably would have to be tonight though.

    If you're not gaming, GPU isn't super important and something like a 960M is fine for a lot of uses. Of course Pascal graphics is a lot more power efficient and you'll see much better battery run times and lower heat with up to date chips.

      I nearly bought the E570 due to an earlier offer here, but they were delayed so I cancelled it. DHL actually tried to deliver it, but I refused delivery as Lenovo already refunded me a couple days earlier and the money was back in my account. They actually sent an email saying they didnt want me to wait for my goodies so sent the 570 without payment being made, so could I please pay them ASAP. LOL. Im assuming as DHL and Lenovo have stopped contact they caught up with it.

      They are 15", I know the 1050 is slower than the 970, as its slower then the 960 I already looked at benchmarks. Well, its not slower always but shading or whatever which seemed importamt, the 960 was better than the 1050, I think thats what I read, I read so many.

      A 7th Gen i7, over a 6th to me is not as important as the graphics. A 17" screen in 7th gen i7 is still $2k.

      Power is kind of an issue, but it wont spend long periods away from power. Heat, I read it does get some ehat. Reviews rate it for its market position at the time.

      Im mostly wondering if theres better options in 17inch, under $1400 I guess. Like everyone I want it all, but $1400 does not allow that. So, I worked my way down to as much older GPU as I can, and 6th Gen CPU. Id happily take a 6th Gen i5, with 980GPU, but I couldnt find one.

      This seems to be as much as I can squeeze from $1400.

    • Hi scrimshaw,

      How do you think it would perform when video editing and gaming (particularly Overwatch and Destiny 2)?

      Thanks!

    Gigabyte:
    No!

  • Just want something nice and grunty

    Not really going to be gaming

    What are you going to be using the grunt for? That's the key factor.

      What ever a computer can do, lets go with that. I know everyone asks that question, I was asked that with my last laptop purchase. And Ive never been satisfied with the Toshiba we ended up with based on the answers. It usually just did what was needed, but often enough was laggy and Id pay $500 not to have that (lifes too short, and money is not that valuable Ill put up with that again), or wouldnt play movies my older PC did. It certainly would not game well, except basic games.

      When i built my PC, I just bought as much as I could for the money I was willing to spend at the time, Ive still got it, and have no issues with it.

      So lets go with as much laptop as I can for $1400, with 17 inch screen. Or some gains in tech to go 15" instead. As said, happy to drop to i5 HQ CPU as my understanding is more GPU is more important than CPU for most non specific uses.

    I agree you need to know exactly what you are going to do with it. If you buy an ultrabook with onboard GPU only, you can forget about gaming completely. So ideally, get something with at least a discrete GPU.

    Just make you sure you have 4 cores / 8 threads and a 256GB or larger SSD.

    Either way, even with some decent prices going around, I feel that it is a bad time to buy laptops,as the new Intel CPUs will be dropping soon. Ryzen laptops are also around the corner. I don't feel the current price drops are worth it with much better tech coming within the next month.

      Except while the value of old gen goes down, availability of old tech isnt endless. You snooze, you lose. And new tech will be at least $2k, for new gen I7 in HQ, and 1060 GPU, and 17" screen.

      It certainly wont be $1400.

      • Yep, I think there will be some good specials coming along within the next month or so.

        Previous generation i7 with 1050ti/1060 should go for some good prices. I will probably be aiming for one of those soon.

        • Same here if a refurbished deal comes along again I might jump on that. $1700 GTX 1070 laptop was a dream bargain machine for me.

          @boondocksaint
          How confident are you Ill get more specs for $1400. I read Id want a 1070 for VR, not that I want VR but you never know what I might want tomorrow. 1050 has less performance where it counts than 960, let alone 970 for gaming duties, or so I read. 1060 is streets ahead though.

          I am sticking to 4 core(HQ), >2gb dedicated graphics and probably an SSD or would upgrade it later that way I get what I choose in instead of the bundled unit. 17 inch screen.

          As I said, if it had everything like 1070 but only 15 inch screen, Id look at it. I dont care about i7 as much, a 6th gen i5HQ will do me.

          @Tuba: roughly $1640 AUD

          https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Helios-GeForce-G3-571-7…

          Cheapest GTX 1060 I know well consistently, there have been some cheaper deals but none on atm.

          If you can wait and deals are important to you black Friday is slowly coming around the corner November 24.

          @Tuba:

          I would not go the 2 core 2 thread route, you are going to kick yourself down the line.

          Keep in mind, the 970/960 were all M variants. The 1xxx series were the first to have a full fledged desktop comparable GPU. A 1050ti will be better than a 960m maybe even a 970m, not too sure at the moment. It will however use a lot less power and produce a lot less heat.

          For $1400, I think that laptop is a good buy.

        • @boondocksaint: I looked up the two GPUs on some comparo site a couple days ago, 1050 to 960, and they come up close in many ways but shading or whatever the measure is, the older 960 won, by a bit too. The 1060 is 50% better than the 970 in just about all regards. But I cant find a 17 inch, 1060 4 core for close to $1400, local.

          Sweet, $1400, I thought it sounded OK from comparos Ive done. I just get lost in all the numbers and start to wonder so thought Id ask here. That and sometimes people know of a deal I havent seen.

          @AlienC: I thought of black friday, but it will be the left overs of the left over NOS by then, and new stuff that is still well over $1400. It never turns out as hoped and we dont want to spend more than $1400.

  • If you are not really gaming why not get a 15.6" GTX 960M 4k Touch UHD screen for $1500 - 20% = $1200

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-7559-GTX960M-Gam…

    Use code PICNIC at checkout for 20% off.

    Should be able to do 4k YouTube and etc.

    Nicer ppi.

    • If my choice is 17 inch, or 4k, Ill pick 17 inch. And not Dell, I would have gone Dell I was looking at the Dell deals a week or so ago, until I read all the headaches Dell put people though with warranty. Normally I take complaints with a grain of salt, but when they are consistent I take notice.

        Yeah no problem everybody's preferences are different just putting it out there in case you wanted a smaller form factor for higher resolution and touch screen.
