Do You Use Key Reseller Sites?

Hi guys

Long time lurker, first post. I have a general question with all the deals with games from sites like G2A and cdkeys. I used to go there often, until I did some research on why they're just generally always cheaper and found out that these sites have no affiliation with the game developers and are effectively selling goods from any method of acquisition legal or not, basically like buying something that fell off the back of a truck.

I ran into this recent YouTube video to on the topic. https://youtu.be/pA7TEJJPTMo

Anyway just wanted to hear some ozbargainers thoughts.

Thanks

Hell yeah steam is a blatant rip off it's worse than EB games.

Steam sales are a load of crap.

    • Steam isn't a key reseller. Developers and Publishers who have a game on Steam have an agreement with Valve, this is not the case for G2A, Kinguin and other key resellers.

    • Are you high now?

  • I use G2A all the time. The sellers have a 99%+ seller rating at all the games I've ever looked at. The negative news is extremely over-hyped. They're so cheap compared to steam, even if you do somehow get scammed, it would still work out cheaper buying all your games from there. Just stick to sellers with extremely high ratings, it's no different than any other marketplace like eBay.

    • I guess so in a way it's like gumtree for keys. In that sense it should be noted as buyer beware as it is with gumtree you've got no idea whether the goods were legitimately bought or stolen. I.e buying an iPhone from gumtree.

Humble Bundle and Steam keep our family in games at a reasonable price. I have bought a couple of AAA titles fresh off the press from key resellers, as the start price was not worth it as I saw, but generally I like my game devs to be paid so the don't make shitty sequels.

    • They get paid either way. The key must have come from somewhere. Unless the key was stolen, the devs did get paid when the key was purchased from a key source (which quite often are from bundles).
In fact, I find it funny how people slam key resellers but those same people are happy to sell their bundle keys or buy from people who sell bundle keys event though they all know it is prohibited by the bundle sites, it is against their terms and conditions, and ultimately could result in bundles disappearing or becoming more expensive.
I applaud paying a fair price for a good but it must be consistent and not dependent on media hype and news.

      • I agree that many games are overpriced for what they are I.e destiny 2 with its loads of deluxe packs and season passes etc. unfortunately my nephews will end up paying $150+ on that game.

But it's the whole shady nature of how those keys are acquired in the first place. Yes they could have been bought legitimately from whatever bundles that were active and resold just like selling on used goods but in many they could have also been stolen and you won't know as the buyer until the publisher/dev identify the relevant copies that were stolen and subsequently lock them.

        • Keys are rarely stolen (big picture). More often they are bought with stolen funds but the keys are bought nevertheless so payment to devs has been made.

My point is: don't put the reseller sites down if private individuals sell bundle keys etc. which also is against terms and conditions of the sites and deprives the devs of their just and legitimate income, especially if people make 20 accounts to buy twenty bundles which is clearly a circumvention of the restrictions and limitations placed by the devs and publishers.

        • I did buy Fallout 4 Season Pass from a reseller, as they jacked up the price. I find using a cheapy reseller or pirating a valid form of protest against price gouging.

  • my credit card was stolen and used to purchase ~$300AUD of playstation plus credits across 8-9 purchases. I am cautious how I use my card, and they do say you have a 50%+ chance of having your card details stolen online, and its only going to happen in places like G2A. They make good money that site from what they do.
I got the money back, as i noticed the charges within a certain time, and changed credit cards. I was living overseas when this happened.
I point my finger at G2A, as dodgy sites are a dodgy site. I'm never going to pay full price for a game, always less than $20 (mostly $10 price point), and i'll buy from humble bundle, nuuvem or cdkeys instead now.
If you buy from these sites regularly, check your statements.

I always use Paypal, that's a little safer right? I get notifications on my phone when paypal purchase is done, and they hold the money for a long time so you can dispute it.

  • I feel somewhat bad with some of the grey sellers like G2A, but many steam key sellers are authorised fronts that get their keys directly from the developers (e.g. greemangaming) and they're generally where I get my keys since they're usually cheaper than steam directly.

  • I don't mind using G2A for things like overseas Xbox currency. (If it's a good deal.)
Otherwise, I find them to be more expensive than other options for steam keys.

Recently, I've moved away from G2A and onto Plati.ru for Russian Xbox currency. (One shady ass site to another.)
