EB Games - PS Plus Membership Code on Invoice Faded

Hi guys, bought on 9th June from EB Games the $49.95 ps plus 1 yr membership when the sale was on earlier this year.

Now of all the places (maybe they purposely do it) the invoice has faded on one of the codes, so much that i can only make out the last 4 digits of the 12. the other first 8 digits i can barely see using light reflecting off the old imprint, so much that i can't complete the code.

These codes are valid for 12 months from purchase so it is a bit poor that the paper they print them on barely lasts 3 months… i've taken a photo of the first code but is there any salvage for the second?

They would have linked my eb games account when i bought it…. will that have my codes saved down that they can retrieve and reprint for me? Anyone know or tried i.e. lost their code or had the paper faded?

Any suggestions?

Why didn't you enter them when you bought. They do stack.

Most receipts say take a copy as they thermal receipts fade with light and heat.

    • They were literally stashed in my backpacks zipped up pocket. So no light. no idea how heat cuold affect it inside a backpack and all but somehow it's only the code section (go figure).

I didn't load them as I think they activate from redemption. and i knew i was going to be busy between June and end of this year working on my house so there was no point wasting 6 months.

Edit: am hoping the eb games membership stores it. even the ref id is half faded so i don't know if i can get the first half to prove it up. but the invoice has all the time and cost so surely they can check the codes for that time i hope. good reason i bought the wallet card (physical card) back in dick smith days as opposed to a receipt.

Go back to eb and see if they can reprint it because the code should be tied to the receipt number

    • Thanks. Hoping someone here has done it before. the fact that my payment EFTPOS receipt and the header of the receipt is still bright and readable that they can check it back.

MY EB World account number is all on there - hopefully it'll work. Given up trying to work out the remaining digits. very close but too many combos with 3 or 4 missing :(

Here's one way to recover the information on thermal paper receipts

I have successfully used a hairdryer myself; set it on hot and aim it at the thermal paper.

I would test this on the receipt you have a photo of, prior to trying the one you don't have a photo of.

    • interesting. the issue is the one i can see is still bright so i can't exactly test it. it's really only the faded one that could be tested (after all no point trying it on a non faded receipt). lol keeping those non faded receipts woulda been awfully handy now. didn't even know this was possible.

      • Do it anyway even if it's not faded, just to see if the theory works given it is made of the same paper. I believe heat should fade the text before turning the paper black.

        • probably worth trying after a trip to eb this weekend (if they won't reprint or can't do it) as a last resort then.

        • tried it… the one that was already visible is even easier to see, albeit dark background. the one that was faded is even worse.. maybe becuase i couldn't fully commit, but then i notice even on the rest of the receipt there are bald white , smooth patches that dont show up any text. These seemed to be the faded parts as well, maybe something wrong with the original thermal printing?

didn't want to try it longer just incase lol.

        • @SaberX: lol, it works because the chemical that turned it black was used up, so heating the docket creates a inverse print where the original heated paper doesn't have the chemical to turn black anymore.

Your paper might have got wet washing the chemical off in places, but either way half arseing it ruined your chance to do what the YouTuber did.

I'd have hit PlayStation up direct before I ruined my receipt though… Sony are generally very good to deal with, and you had both to prove you bought 2 but only activated one…

        • @Slippery Fish:

so if you stop you can't continue it?

EIther way the ink didn't show and i tried it on another receipt and if anyhting areas that are visible become darker and easier to see and lighter areas a mess (paper just darkens) so i doubt i would have seen the faded bits, either that or you need the hot plate and not the hair dryer?

That said I still have the original header and no diference in what i can read albeit a darkened receipt in parts…. not sure if sony would entertain with the amount of transactions they get, surely it would be EB that would pull up the transaction (if any)?

and no - i hadn't activated any. both were just on receipt, as mentioned above i didn't want the 1 yr to begin hence why i didn't load it on.

I didn't take pictures as it was the same day i got a new phone, (s8) and still setting up, very busy etc. So perfect storm - normally i would.

        • @SaberX: well then idk man, I doubt en will help you, it'd be Sony who have an interest in keeping you happy imo, EB already has your money and supplied the goods.

And yes if it's still printed printed parts become darker, I'll try some experiments on some dockets from work tomorrow night :)

  • try blacklight?

  • Take it to a place with Xerox photocopiers. The machines have the ability to bring out the letters and numbers by disabling shadow suppression and turning up the contrast.

Thermal rolls from any store fade, and fade fast.

The insinuation that it's deliberate is laughable. No one gets any benefit from you not redeeming the code.

The code won't be on your EB card, it is downloaded and printed direct onto the receipt when you pay.

Call PlayStation. Explain the situation. Email photo of the reciept. They will be able to figure out it wasn't redeemed and give you the remaining numbes.

  • Always, always scan your receipts IF there is anything important on them or take a photo…They usually always fade..I'm surprised you've never experienced this before? It doesn't matter IF you keep light away from them they'll usually do some fading on their own due to the room temp around where ever you've kept them.

    • to be honest - nope. I haven't had anything warranty or tax related etc. fade, or at least i've never had to come back to it so neve rnoticed.

In my push to go paperless perhaps investing in a small decent, fast and efficient scanner or portable one could be useful for receipts too. I assume for tax purposes and other warranty you advise to immediately scan on regular intervals? Will photos work? As I hear some places won't honour photos of receipts or 'copies' i.e. scans, hence originals or nothing?

      • Most store related dockets these days fade. I have one sitting in the back of a book for last years tax and it faded..I hadn't moved it anywhere. I know some places are fickle with you needing to provide the original and not the copy BUT if you have both then you can provide both..Then just make sure you get the original back.

        • yeap, i rang the help line and using my date and times they could pull up both. although i only needed the one retrieved.

they mentioned you can 'check' if your code works by using the sony network website but not proceeding? Is that going through the 'redemption page' but not confirming once you hit the next screen?

        • @SaberX: Not sure, as I don't get my subscription that way and anything I redeem I do straight away without thinking about it. But subs do stack so you could put it on top of you sub already.

        • @SaberX: yes its true you can check psn codes then cancel out without activating

If you're buying from EB games become a EB World member. Scan your card at purchase time and your account will contain a digital copy of all your receipts. That way if you loose your receipt or in OP case cant read it. They can easily retrieve them just by scanning the card.

thanks. in this case EB pointed me to their over east call guys who asked for some detials - dates etc and tracked back the voucher # for my ps plus that way. just FYI for anyone else in the future :) stil a good idea to load onto EB World member card just to be safe/easily trackable.
