Damn this phone actually looks really good. I think it'll be the new budget champ. Move over Motorola G!

    • +9

One problem is no NFC. Otherwise it's a dream HW-SW partnership

      • Agreed. Don't buy if you use android pay. Otherwise, I can live without Band 28. Better battery capacity would be appreciated too (especially since Nexus phones always had poor battery life). But otherwise, this is near perfect budget phone specs

    • +1

It has a surprisingly good camera for its price too - 2x optical zoom / 1.25μm.

      • Yeah more like the opposite of what LG is doing with the v30

      • Is it the pixel sensor like the mi5?

        • According to the specs this has bigger pixel size than the mi5. It uses a low resolution than the mi5, so that helps improve pixel size. The aperture isn't as wide on this phone as the mi5 either according to the specs, so that means light will have a harder time getting to sensor. On paper I doubt you'd find too much better camera wise for price. And the telephoto lens will give it an advantage in certain situations over other phone cameras. It seems like a great choice for someone that just wants to get vanilla Android support for a few years without needing to tinker.

      • Have to check out the real photo first.

Battery is only 3000mAh, I'll prefer Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 over this.

    • +5

If you root a RN4 and put on a stock ROM you'd get pretty close to this. But camera on RN4 is shite. Only thing that stops me from getting one of those. Its the battery life king though!

      • +4

        https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/6vtcle/hdr_is_a_gam…

RN4 camera is quite capable when u install google's processing into it

      • You trade a smaller battery for a thinner build. If you use the Google camera app to force HDR+ it'll provide better quality images in certain situations at the expense of speed.

      • XJO mode, continuous focus mode. Your camera will be fine. I use opencamera

    • +2

Got the Redmi Note 4X (3/32GB) 2 days ago @ $150 AUD, can't complain at such price.

      • +6

yep going to install LineageOS 14.1 and then the modded google camera apk, it will be basically this phone but with better bezels and better battery

        • +4

Installed Viper OS and Google Cam on mine and It's insane! Getting 12hr screen on time and solid pictures!

        • @3liminate: You happen to have a link to a site with step-by-step instructions on how to do this?

        • +5

          @reyals16:

          Sure thing.

So you have to unlock the boot loader (getting permission from xiaomi usually takes a day and then once granted, you wait 72 hours) , root and install twrp which is done through this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQFhR0d1b20

          Then Viper OS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/xiaomi-redmi-n…

          And Google Cam is: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/themes/google-…

Keep in Mind that this is for Redmi Note 4 (or 4x) Snapdragon processors :D

        • +1

          @3liminate: Appreciate that - you're a legend! I'll give this a go once my 4x arrives.

        • +5

          @reyals16:

No worries man. Yeah Mine's a 4X too. Been loving it over the past week.

I would create a Mi account now - so just google: 'xiaomi mi account' and register.

Then, As soon as you get the device, sign in to it and then apply for unlocking permission online following that vid.

Let me know how you go - shoot me a pm if you're having trouble :D

        • This looked like a great idea until i saw the 4x doesn't have USB C. How long does it take to charge that sucka???

        • +1

@aimon: i think on custom roms the RN4 has quick charge 3 enabled? someone knows? (ill just use my moto g5 plus quick charger)

        • @nathan-drake:

Looks like its possible but a lot of people say its a bad idea in case your phone ends up killing you ;P

      • Oo which deal was that?

      • nice phone

      • paid $135 for note 4 be here Monday.

        • +1

i already received my 135 buck RN4, amazing for the price, have to wait 72 hours before bootloader can be unlocked though as per xiaomi rules

        • Link to that deal?

        • +3

link still works but AUS $155 now

        • +1

          @paulaus:

Yeah, I missed the deal and picked it up for $155 too. Looking forward to Monday!

        • +2

@nathan-drake: shopmonk used DHL, right? Faster than Priority Line of Gearbest, I guess

      • nfc?

        • No NFC on these Redmi phones

    • Still waiting for any announcement for new model of the battery king Lenovo P2 with 5100mAh.

      • I am waiting for my P2 to come, odered last month on Aliexpress.

  • I have to say.
a Redmi note 3 Kate with lineage and Google camera beats this.

    Still had phone nonetheless

    • In what way does the Kate beat the Mi A1 apart from battery size? I own the Note 3 Kate version and absolutely love it (apart from the terrible camera), but doesn't this phone have much better specs?

Can't see myself getting rid of the Kate for a while yet though!

      • +1

        B28

I love my "Kate" and I see no reason to replace it :)

        • +1

Has B28 made any actual difference for you? For example are you living in an rural area?

Besides that does the phone do carrier aggregation using B28?

Sorry really want to know what so important with B28.

        • @jlogic: yer I really dont know the fuss with B28 lol but the phone is great and has the best reception against any other phone I have had!

    • Kate with Google camera?
Do you mean Google Pixel HDR+ camera?
I thought the hacked google camera app worked only on phones with SD 835, 821, 820 and 625 SoCs.
      Isn't Kate SD650?

      • +1

        Gcam Works on 650.

What's better. Not a lot really but.
The 650 is slightly faster than 625
B28 if it makes a difference for you.
Personally I prefer b28. First, it gives you greater coverage of 4g in the country side. Secondly in the cities it has greater penetration in buildings.

There is a reason telcos were all over the analogue tv spectrum once it was decommissioned.

For me, I like doing road trips. It really does make a difference.

  • +11

Pull the trigger on this. after Apple, and Samsung…cant justify spending more than $300 on phones. Will be a good update to the S4!

  • +4

It's not going to be MIUI. It is raw version of android OREO. It will be the first phone to get android P.

    • +4

oreo is stated to come out by December 31st (this phone comes with 7.1.2 nougat). It will be "one of the first" to get P (not the first). Software updates will be handled by Xiaomi, not Google unfortunately

      • sorry. My bad

      • only as the camera used is by Xiaomi
and they want to know if any conflicts with firmware and camera before release

      • And my other Xiaomi devices are very slow on the updates.

  • Anyone know which phone case which will fit this model?

  • +1

good replacement for Nexus 5X?….still battling out with Kogan on bootloop issues….3mths now….

    • +2

took me 3 months and by the end not so nice messages with DWI good luck i feel your pain!

    • +1

Still battling with bootloops issues with my Nexus 5…

    • I'd like to know if it's faster than the 6P

  • +1

Can someone please explain what are the implications of no band 28?

    • +1

no band 28 means slower data in some area where band 28 would get you faster data , also less coverage inside buildings as 700 mhz goes through walls better …… band 28 are the newer towers for optus telstra and tpg when they get their own towers. voda doesn't use band 28.

band 28 is more of a bonus for people who are after data speeds in congested areas or inside buildings.

for tpg I think they only bought band 28 in spectrum auction so must user optus or somebody for other bands.

    • Band 28 =700mhz spectrum. Telstra and to a lesser extent Optus i think use it as part of their 4G networks. Voda use 850 instead of 700. Basically you will, at times, have poorer 4G coverage or bounce from 4G to 3G more frequently if you use Telstra or Optus. Likewise your ability to make VoLTE calls (4G voice) would be lessened a bit if the phone supports it… on Telstra anyway. Not sure if Optus launched that yet. If you use a Vodafone sim in it you should not have ang of these limitations assuming Vodafone coverage is good where you are.

    • so just to be clear, there are no issues regarding compatibility with Australian networks just the speed may be affected?

      • +2

No Telstra and assume Optus deploy a number of B28 only sites. B28 is basically Telstra's coverage layer with other frequencies used for capacity. Personally I wouldn't purchase a phone without it if LTE coverage is important to you

        • If you're with Telstra it shouldn't be a problem.
Anywhere there's B28 coverage there should also be 3G B5 (NextG).
A bit slower but generally speaking ample fast for phone internet.

        • +2

Have a Redmi and not one issue with coverage with Telstra and no B28. Have gone rural (Gero and Cervantes). Drops to 3G and still can use the phone.

Only if your only means of internet was LTE then yes speed may play a part.

Had no issues uploading and downloading emails and messages.

        • +2

@Phoebus: Telstra are deploying sites with B28 only, so underlying W850 coverage may not always be a given.

        • +1

          @pranksta:

Agree. In many regional/rural areas where I use mobile phone/internet, often only a B28 Tower and or small weak/slow 3G signal if I'm lucky. From my experience, Telstra and Optus have converted some of their 3G into 4G instead of doubling up in some areas. Would not get a phone without B28 for my area.

      • I've had no dramas with connectivity or speed in Sydney and the Central coast, as well as down most of the south coast until Batemans Bay. Speeds can be poor in places outside Sydney though.

  • +1

Mi5s from Gearbest for $313 is arguably a better deal

    https://m.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_706441.html

    • Agree, put LOS and google cam hdr app which was originally ported for this phone, and you've basically got a pixel xl for third of the price

      • Wishful thinking. The camera app is not black magic you know.

        • Mi 5s has the same camera as the the Pixel

        • Has the same camera sensor though

        • HDR+ is pretty damn close to it though :)

  • The moto Z play was $300ish from gearbest and had bigger battery and amoled screen but worse camera.
Also front fingerprint vs back fingerprint

    • I found Back Finger Sensor is easier to handle.

      • I like what you did there.

      • +1

True but no front button gets annoying when you just want to quickly glimpse the screen without picking it up or using password

  • What's the deal with Chinese phones and B28? Is it only on phones designed for Taiwan?

    • Yeah, I don't get it. No 28 and usually no NFC either.

    • +3

Because their networks don't use band 28. And they make majority of sales in Asian countries which also don't use Band 28, so they don't need to cater for the rest of the world. But they really should. Going by this site, Xiaomi have a big following here.

  • Is this better than mi 5?

  • +1

Those buying the mi a1 should wait for the taiwan version which should have b28.

    • Where was this mentioned?

      • +2

I'm just guessing. Since this phone would have a special release in Taiwan and they use b28. The note3 pro also had b28 when it was released in Taiwan. So its best to wait.

        • +1

if thats true you probably turned me from a "yeah nah" to an "absolutely" - just need to see some camera reviews and or see if anyone gets HDR+ running on this phone

        • Already pre ordered mine, oh well. No fast internet while I'm in the rural areas :(

        • If there's no Taiwan release for the Mi X5, then there won't be a Taiwan release for this one. Band 28 really isn't that big a deal. I'm on a Redmi Note 3, running on the Telstra Network. Never had issues with speed. I'm on 4G easily 95% of the time. It's when I'm in tunnels or underground that I drop to 3G. Out in the Victorian country, I sit on 4G.

  • +2

Moto seems to have an Android One phone as well. That one will probably have band 28. Based on the Moto X4. Probably going to be $100 more than the Mi A1 though.

  • Finally, something I could buy.

  • Has anyone seen theirs ship yet?

    • Nope, should be soon as they said arrival sep 20th.

  • its just sitting on back-order since Sept 9th, taking too long, cancelling

  • Anyone has theirs shipped yet?
