Adapter to Reverse The Power Socket's Orientation?

I guys, In a bit of a quandary. Having bought the Dyson DC35 in the latest deals here, I mounted it in my kitchen broom closet, and found to my dismay, the power plug (for the fridge), is at the bottom of the cabinet and does not have any clearance for the Dyson transformer (the powerplug touches the floor of the closet). I was hoping to get an adapter that changes the plug to an upside down position, but I can't seem to find one. I know I could use an extension cord, but I was hoping for something more elegant.

Thanks in advance.

Would this Arlec Vertical Double Adapter work?

You can plug this into the wall socket and the Dyson into the higher of the 2 adapter sockets.

get a sparky to turn the GPO upside down? :)

    • I did it myself for one of mine… Just turned off the power at the main, unscrewed it, turned it around 180 degrees and then screwed it back in again…Is that illegal?

      • I believe it is, but because of idiots that have no clue and electrocute themselves.

Sounds like you're switched on enough that it shouldn't be an issue.

      • Technically yes it's illegal hence I didn't suggest DIY however… yes, if you turn the power off at the mains it might magically turn itself upside down without a sparky being around :)

What about plugging in a powerboard? That costs little.

    • Definitely this, either an extension cord, or a power cord is pretty cheap and it should help in case of surges.

      • +1 for power board. If space is an issue just wall mount it with some tape or diy instrument.

  • While I generally dislike using adaptors for anything like this, you could try to find a Chinese universal travel adaptor. The difference to the ones found here are that China uses pins shaped in a "V" whereas we we use an inverted "V" shape. In other words, they are identical, just rotated 180°. You should be able to fit an AU slanted plug in the "universal" holes.

Otherwise you could try your luck with the small $1 adaptors on eBay, e.g. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Universal-EUUS-to-AU-Power-Pl… . These generally accept US (twin vertical/parallel) or EU (round) pins, but an AU plug should jam right in there as well.

I dislike this solution because adaptors tend to extend the plug a fair way out and there is a lot of leverage on them, and they are cheap and nasty and tend to fall out. That could present a fire hazard, plus they are not certified for use here. I like the twin vertical double-adaptor solution, or rotate the socket solutions presented above.

  • They exist - i have one. Think i bought it from Dick Smith back in the day. It's a single passthrough plug on one side with a socket on the other that is upside down.
Markings on it are: "Austialec up-1 250vac 10a Approval No.Q97036"

    • Oh, and just to confirm, the brand is definitely printed as Austialec. However it's in the exact same fine as the company Australec uses. More likely to be an error than a coincidence maybe

    • I think they did exist, they don't anymore. I've ended up using a powerboard screwed into the wall.
