Lifestyle Change at 40 Something

Were in our 40s, where would you recommend a lifestyle change to :

Currently living in Canberra, but this winter has been harsh, summer is no better - too damn hot or too damn cold.
Looking for perhaps some acreage 1-4, to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, not too isolated, but definately not in the hustle and bustle.

Where would you recommend? thats affordable (after all, Ozbargin's about saving a buck or two).

TIA

abit about us…
origninally came from nz 7 years ago. Im a nurse, partners in security. We have a 16 and 11 year old. Like the pace of canberra, but not the dramatic climate and weather. Sold my house in nz 2 years ago. Havent found where to settle down yet.

Anywhere next to a domino's or fix or kebab shop for me.

  • South East QLD, Toowoomba area is nice, has turned into a rat race over the last 10 years but not quite as bad as a capital city. Only a 90 minutes drive from Brisbane, has it's own airport, plenty of the usual shopping centre crappy shops. A junk food outlet on every corner, but at least the climate is good. House prices are slowly coming off the boil too. Or 10 minutes north you'll find Hampton which is a lot quieter and nicer still.

  • Plenty of possible answers. Can you narrow it down a bit with what sort of work you want, and what sort of recreation you like?

I'd prefer to be near the ocean, and if looking for a career change would want some hands on work.

    • Access to work is the usual decider. Plenty of wonderful, affordable places in oz, but limited income opportunities. And even if you have a portable income, if you have kids it limits their future options.
Is the coast near Canberra possible? Nice climate, not cheap but not Sydney/Melbourne prices either.

  • Don't matter 'where' too much, just make sure you have views and living area facing North…best tip for house buying you will ever get…relax in the sun in winter, wondering why no one has ever told you before.

  • I second SEQ. Either go north, south or west. Toowoomba, North McClean, Springfield Lakes, Coomera, Mt Tamborine… endless choices. Tell us your budget, interest, children….

    Try Tinder or Grinder

  • Assuming you're on the APS gravy train, surely the 15.4% super, cushy APS pay and (assuming you've made it just in time to be eligible for the) PSS super doesn't that make it all worthwhile around here?

    Albury.

Lived there before I moved to Brisbane 9 years ago. I liked it. Relatively calm. Affordable housing. Plenty of shops+restaurants. Pleasant.

Don't be confused and assume Wodonga is the same. It's not. Wodonga is a flat, barren, culturally devoid wasteland.

    • Wrong side of the river then?
