OVO Mobile Now Not Allowing Recharge before Expiry

I was going to recharge my mobile broadband plan today as I'd ran out of data.
Recharge didn't go through so I rang them up and got response they recently changed their policy so they don't allow recharge before expiry date anymore.
This change is so inconvenient and I didn't receive any notification regarding this change so it seemed so unfair to me.
Anyway thought I'd share to warn the others.

  • are you recharging the plan or just topping up data?
    the policy has always been "Your OVO service may be renewed (recharged) once only within 30 days. " so 1 recharge per month.

    FYI for people topping up data:
    On another note, I had an issue when topping up data. The topped up data allowance is used first instead of your plan data. so for example, if your plan had 200 mb left and you topped up with 1gb, this 1gb is used first and expires a month later. Therefore that remaining 200mb on you plan isn't used and will expire first. So unless you finish up your topped data, that 200mb is wasted.

    • No idea about policy. Id seen their rep here said you can recharge or top up when you run out of data and it'd always been that way until last month.

  • Businesses give you extra data, extra value, but they'll have to recoup it back somehow…it's the little details.

    • Sure, but I'm not ready to pay 450% more for them to recoup costs. (eg. being forced to top up 1GB for $10 rather than recharge 25GB plan for $45) and I'm sure many others will feel the same way.
      Rep claimed that you can recharge when data runs out, that's why I signed up in the first place. I've used their service for 4 months and I'm suddenly forced to "top up" instead of "recharge" to get more data.
      Even if it is unofficial it would only be fair that they at least notify customers of the change.

  • it was fine for me even 2 weeks ago, now its somehow gone and feeling really pissed off 😤 its definitely not for the fans anymore.

    Optus has forced them to do so apparently, according to agents in chat. They will allow charging before 1 day only now.
