Car Registration

Hi all,

thinking out loud and purely hypothetical, but has anyone who lives in a major capital city (say Melbourne) changed their registered address to a city that's considered lower risk (say Stawell) to lower their registration costs?

If you have a relative who lives there and mail will end up with you, what's stopping you?

Insurance is a different issue and would stay as the actual address.

Vehicle location……………………………………..Total cost
Metropolitan area (High risk zone)……………….$801.90
Outer metropolitan (Medium risk zone)…………..$677.80
Rural (Low risk zone)………………………………$558.80

Try the postcode calculator.

EDIT: Seems if you want to change your car's registration address, it tries to confirm it by linking details to your Licence address. I'm sure you could change that address and do the registration address too… Changing address for licence takes 2 mins and needs no proof. Plus you can change your postal address to anywhere you like. Like, say your actual address in Metro city…

You could, but during insurance claim, Insurance company can deny.

    • How? My comprehensive insurance will stay as my current address? It asks where it normally kept overnight and I'll answer it truthfully.

The registration fee asks nothing and doubt the TAC needs anything.

      • You got a point, as long as you can also prove that you living in both address since insurance company can be basted and tell you that policy address and residence address miss match? Other than you be fine.

edit, else you breaking the law https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/renew-replace-or-up…

      • When you make a claim you will find out HOW?
They will deny your claim based on the address of the car registration not matching with the one held by VicRoads

        How do i know?
Other halves claim was denied for this very reason!!

We took them to the ombudsman.. the ombudsman said they would not help as its a standard clause in all policies that your car registration address and your insured address must match.

You have to have your car insured and registered at same address, you can then tell the insurance company that during week (for example) you stay in the city.. then they will cover you.. but you better have the KMS on your car when you make a claim to back up your "travel from regional area every week"

        • How does that work with a company car, they are work address

  • lower their registration costs

Wow, never even knew that Vic rego varied depending on area, in NSW and other states it's the one price?

    • I think for us it's the Transport Accident Charge that changes it so much. My current breakdown of fees is:

      Registration fee; $290.40
      TAC Charge: $465.00
      Insurance Duty: $46.50

      • So do you guys still need a green slip (compulsory insurance)?

        • It's included in our rego, but you still buy your own to cover other people/your own property. The TAC simply covers people's injuries. Pretty steep if we all pay so much a year.

        • @2jzzzz:

That's actually not too bad if insurance is included, cheaper than NSW as Green Slips here are a rip-off.

Rego is about $450 plus at least $500-$600 for compulsory Green Slip insurance for most vehicles.

        • @Scab:

And if you lost a point or more that price of the green slip will jump a extra $200 more :(

    • Cheaper up the coast sydney is a rip

  • On a similar topic, I recently relocated to Melb and my wife did the whole car rego/license transfer thing.. I am keeping my NSW license for a couple more months until I am off my green Ps to avoid the extra year. Not only was this expensive but incredibly cumbersome. I do however think that VIC may be cheaper than NSW due to CTP (or whatever it is called) being included… Although I am not 100%.

Whilst I was doing that I wanted to change my PHI to my new address. I was told by HCF I would be charged an extra $300 because Melbourne is more high risk than Sydney - I have already paid my yearly premium upfront. I asked them what the implications are if I do not change it. They said none, with the exception of mail. Needless to say, I left my residential address as NSW (same as License - parents in law) and postal to VIC. I'll shop around in March.

VIC may be cheaper than NSW due to CTP

It is, Green Slips are so expensive, especially when a large percentage of the cost is for the Government Medical Care and Injury Services Levy.

I still remember when that levy was introduced, I think it was Morris Iemma who stated it would only be $20 a year extra for premium cover for everyone.

It's something like 25% of the total cost now, and I have no idea what the insurance component is for if you have to pay an extra levy.

That's what you're insuring against, injury and medical care so why the levy?

      • CTP is like $50 to $60 a month or ~$2 a day. That's a bargain considering that medical and care may cost $1000s pa for what can be the rest of the person's life.

        • It's not a bargain compared to other states, they can provide quality care for much less.

        • @Scab:
Perhaps the cost of providing medical care in nsw is higher than those in the other states. The price we pay is perhaps the cheapest one can charge for the same level of medical care.

        • @whooah1979:

Problem is when they introduced the levy they said it would give people top cover, then they limited the cover and the levy has gone through the roof.

Even the government admits Green Slips are too expensive and from the 1st of December the price is supposedly dropping: https://goo.gl/m2Dvrc

  • OP should consider positing it as a deal/hack.

    • Nah, discussion only.

Apparently, it is required by law to change address within 14 days
    https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/renew-replace-or-up…

If anyone is willing to take a chance, you can always create an online account with VicRoads. You will then receive your rego via that account. So, no need to worry about needing physical registration notice for making the payment. In Victoria registration stickers do not apply. This helps too.

Having said that I would not like to take law for a ride.

    • Having said that I would not like to take law for a ride.

What about taking them for a drive?

Transport Accident Charge is also an insurance and might have T&C stating you must provide the correct garaged address. But I am not sure what happens if you change your address after the rego is paid.

  • You can be fined

  • If you change your address at rego time, then change it back during the year do you have to pay the difference? Pretty sure in NSW once the rego is paid, that's it for the year. I sold a car years ago to someone who was in a lesser risk category (me<25, them>40) and I'll bet they didn't get a refund either.

  • Saving on compulsory third party insurance: $243
Denied insurance due to fraud: priceless.

    • "I was living there for a month at the time of registration renewal." I'll update my address when I go back to Melbourne.

Tip: don't broadcast your intent to break the law on the internet.
