SunRice Medium Grain White Rice - 5kg for $6.80 @ Coles (Save $6.80)

110

Not sure when the special finishes. Good price, not the cheapest but pretty close.
However combining it with the recently purchased Coles Myer Gift Cards (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322843) it brings the price down to $4.06 with 40% off (assuming you got the $50 GC with $20 credit from AMEX) which I think may be the cheapest but happy to be corrected otherwise; nevertheless pretty good price especially at your local supermarket.

Pretty worthy of stocking up hence my post.
Don't forget to collect those Flybuy points!
Enjoy.

    Nowhere near the acceptable quality grain any rice-snob would even lay eyes on (medium grain with a high % of broken grains), but ok for the uninitiated masses I suppose given the price.

    • +4

      Tell me oh Rice Snob: what do you regard the best local brown rice to buy?

      • +1

        I don't buy any Australian rice at all. Quite like the India Gate Sella rice.

        • Is that a brown grain? Locally available?

        • +2

          @0jay:

          India Gate also have an excellent quality, long grain Brown rice but you'll need to search for it (locally available).

          Whilst I enjoy eating Brown rice others in the family don't, so the Sella-Basmati makes a nice compromise.

        • @xuqi: Thanks. Can you sling me a reference point where I may find it? Major outlets preferred as I'm in Geelong..

        • +3

          @0jay:

          Pop into your nearest indian store and you're bound to find it.

          If you can lay hands on Pakistani rice (Khan's etc) they'd be even better.

        • @mhaqs: Noted!

          @0jay:

          I've only lived in Adelaide and Perth so can't help you with specific locations in Geelong, maybe other members can help out.

          In Perth I buy our rice from 3 different retailers, depending on who has stock of what.

          Coventry village Morley, an Indian importer/retailer in Stirling, or another Indian importer/retailer in Canning Vale.

          I suggest asking around to find who in Geelong sells the brand, and visit compare prices. If all else fails, you can always check for importers / retailers in Melbourne.

          Keep in-mind that the good qulaity rice will set you back between $17-$25 per 5KG bag, but in no way are Sunrice & premium brands comparable (grain length/quality, cooked quality, taste, texture, aroma, etc.)

          Given the normal retail price of Sunrice is fairly close to the premium quality grain, it's a complete rip-off.

        • @mhaqs:

          Khan's is great but unfortunately hard to come-by.

        • @xuqi: where did you shop in Adelaide?

          Do you have any info on the nutrition differences of these rices (carbs, GI rating, fibre content)? I'm trying to find healthier pasta and rice.

        • Do they have medium grain rice? Don't quite like long grain because it's too dry and skinny.

          Don't worry about GI, rice does not give you diabetes, your overall diet does.

        • @SamR: Thanks SamR. Now I've got another thing to watch out for ;). I like most of Mosely's work, eg. Pain, Pus and Poision - a superb BBC documentary. Riddled with modern history and loads of fantastic stories, eg thalidomide.

          There is strong evidence that Australia's war on fat should have been a war on carbs. There is a lot of reputable evidence to support this. Start with this. It's the first link I found just now.

          @DeWalt:

          After long personal research I have come to the conclusion it is not fat or carbs.

          You can gorge on carbs if you want, eat as much as you like and you will be lean, they just have to be completely unprocessed.

          The same seems to apply to unprocessed nuts to a large extent too.

          Industrial food makes you fat and kills you, this should be minimised.

          My 2c

        • @SamR: that's basically the conclusion I've seen too.

          Thanks for the good comments!

          @DeWalt: Most studies also forget to mention that EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT! When I was young I could eat double what everybody else ate but still stay thin and scrawny. I had a high metabolism, and my body always felt hot even if I was walking around in snow without a shirt on. I simply couldn't put on weght, no matter how much junk food, pizza, deep fried food I ate. Yet I had friends who were obese and still put on weight even though they were on diets.

          I've had health issues for years so I tried a couple of diets suggested by doctors - hoping they'd fix my health problems - but became incredibly sick, because it turns out I can't absorb some nutrients as readily as other people, so I wasn't getting enough. Also the nutrients I needed could only absorbed when diluted in oils or fats, so eating them with rice meant my body couldn't use them, but if I ate them in an oily pizza or chicken nugget I was fine. Turns out my junk food diet was keeping me alive! Years later I found out what was causing the health issues, and there was no way a diet would ever have fixed them.

          Also, people's bodies change over time. After age 36 I started putting on weight and couldn't nearly eat as much. Still can't put on much weight though.

          Each diet needs to be tuned to the person. Insisting that everybody be on the same diet can be very dangerous. People need to eat what works for them. Some of the health nuts I know who exercise every day and monitor everything they eat and refuse to eat "junk food" started getting sick before they even turned 40 from heart issues or bad joints, or even cancer. The body is pretty good at working out what is needed and crapping out what's not needed, so feeding it a steady varied diet usually works pretty well, then the body can decide what it needs. The fact that the experts change their recommended diets every few years means they don't understand it fully themselves. I know they will one day, but it hasn't happened yet.

  • Where do you buy the Coles Myers gift card to take advantage of the Amex spend $50 get $20 back deal?

    • +1

      Have a look at the link in the OP, for me it is in the CBD Myer near top level.

      • Thanks picked up 2 x$50 today.

    • at least, it should marked as Targeted

      • +1

        The deal itself is not targeted, the rice is on special. Whether it's a bargain or not depends on each person, a deal may not be useful for everyone. The AMEX 40% off is just an additional top up to better the original deal. And if you checked the OP link, the vogue AMEX deal is also not targeted, there's merely a prerequisite that you need an AMEX card which everyone can apply for. Unfortunately marking this as targeted doesn't make much sense I am afraid.

  • +1

    Since it relates to the Amex deal and after you get the Coles Myer gift card, you can buy anything at coles for 40% off (below $50), is that right?

    • That is correct, the rice is just a pretty good deal if you don't mind the rice. I also purchased other stuff at Coles too.

    Every time we've bought SunRice we ended up with bugs crawling through it after only a few weeks. I tried calling the 1800 info number on the side of the pack, but the idiots blamed us saying we must have an insect infestation. This was in a freshly painted pantry. It was stored in a Sistema airtight container next to two other identical containers of different brand rice which had been there for months yet had no bugs growing in them.
    If you look at the SunRice packaging you'll see a row of perforations which allow air and water into the pack. The info line insists this is to "let the rice breathe" yet no other brands have these perforations. I'm pretty sure it's so the bags don't fill with air meaning they can pack more into each delivery van. The perforations mean bugs can get in, and water, and mould. It's not immediately dangerous because you need to boil rice before eating it, but it doesn't keep once the bugs get in. I had to clean out the entire pantry and wash every surface last year after we opened the SunRice container and moths flew out. It was disgusting. Yet other brands have lasted nearly a year without issue. They'd probably last longer except we ate them first.
    We've had SunRice go bad three times in the past six years, so we refuse to buy it now. My wife is from Thailand so she's lived on rice her entire life and knows a thing or two about it. We even tried storing it in the freezer for a month which people suggested online, but after taking it out and drying it in the sun, it still grew bugs. We tried putting some chili in the container, that failed too. She and her friends have only seen rice go bad after it was mistreated. I must stress again, we've been buying 5kg bags of other brands from Chinatown for ten years, usually two bags a year. SunRice is the only brand which had problems. No more allowed in this household!

    • If you look at the SunRice packaging you'll see a row of perforations

      Been buying Sunrice for years, always been in sealed bags.

      • What area do you live in? In Sydney the SunRice bags all have little perforations along one side. It's quite possible that different areas have different packaging. You have to look closely too, as they are very small.

        I haven't looked this year, but last year the bags still had perforations. I initially thought it was from a damaged conveyor belt sprocket which was puncturing everything as it moved alone the line, but it seems they are put there on purpose. The person I called at their 1800 info number on the pack confirmed they had perforations and insisted that it was to "let the rice breathe" which sounded like BS.

        The perforations may be nothing to do with the bugs in the rice. It could be something to do with where they are stored before packing, or the way it's stored where I shop, or maybe the delivery trucks and loading docks in my local area are filthy and don't get washed often enough. Who knows. All I know is the problem only occurs with SunRice and no other brands, and that the bags I purchased literally had holes in them.

        • I buy 10kg bags, they're in a really thick plastic bag and are airtight.

        • +1

          @Scab: Thanks for the advice, but I'd prefer to simply never give them any more money, especially after they dismissed all my concerns and implied I lived in bug-infested dwellings. Companies like that should not be encouraged.

          I don't even like SunRice, my wife only bought it the first time because it was on special, then bought it again a couple of years later thinking the bugs were just bad luck and maybe it would be OK this time, then the third time bought a smaller 1kg pack because we ran out of rice faster than expected with no time to buy a big bag, and a bunch of family about to visit for dinner. All three started growing bugs within 3-5 weeks. On paper $6.80 sounds like a good deal for 5kg of rice, but considering we threw more than half of it away three times, not so much. I tried to retrieve as much as possible by sieving and sifting out the bugs (I don't mind bugs in rice, as you need to boil it anyway before eating it) then freezing it, but the bugs and moths had secreted silky web-like stuff into the rice, which made it unusable.

          Golden Phoenix Jasmine Rice (available at many Asian grocery stores) tastes and smells amazing, as does some of the Basmati rice we've bought over the years. If you've only ever bought SunRice (as I suspect is the case with many Aussies, majority of my family included) you're limiting your tastes. Try something different (next time it's on special of course!)

  • We ate rice everyday. Rice cakes, rice milk, then we found out about arsenic in rice. I thought we were being healthy. And Australian rice has more arsenic than the imported ones. Cut diwn on rice and buy it from countries where it grows more naturally (not a dry country like ours). It is especially bad for kids. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24892387
