Sourdough Bread - Where To Buy?

It's hard to find good sourdough bread that's not too expensive and conveniently located. Where do you buy your sourdough bread?

Have you found any decent sourdough bread in the major supermarkets - Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, etc? If you buy your sourdough bread from the major supermarkets, how do you find the quality?

I buy mine from Chez Jean-Claude patisserie in Subiaco Perth. No idea what rubbish the major supermarkets peddle.

I buy the Coles Bakery sourdough and find them nice and tasty…not too expensive at $3 from memory.

  • I get mine from the reduced to clear section of IGA. Closer to the best before date, but cheaper

  • The Aldi Pana De Casa is ok.

    • I don't think that's a sourdough. They do have asourdough loaf that's smaller and about a dollar more.

I buy mine from a bloke at the local markets on the weekends. It's outstanding and better than any store bought stuff. Bit pricier though.

    Anyone make their own?

Yes - I make my own.
Takes a while but well worth it for the results you get. Also doesn't cost $8 - $9 a loaf which is the going rate in Sydney for a decent sourdough.

I make my own too. The nicest I've had in a supermarket is Woolies' though. Their sourdough with jalapeno is good and quite hefty, the way sourdough should be IMO. I didn't like Aldi's.

  • Bakers Delight will bake a standing order if you want regularity.

As far as I can see, most of the supermarket stuff, and at cheap bread shops is made with YEAST, not a proper sour dough starter.

I think if you want REAL sour dough bread, you have to find the artisan bakers, and pay dearly for it.

One of the things on my to do list one day, though a friend has said he will give me some of his starter, to help me out.

Yes, yeast plus malic acid to create the sour flavour.

You can't skimp on sourdough - it takes time and quality ingredients. If it's cheap, it probably isn't real sourdough.

    • The supermarket sourdough I've had lists "sourdough culture" or "sourdough starter" on the ingredients list?

  • Aldi's sourdough is OK for the price.

  • I'm surprised at how good the Baker's Delight one is but at $5.90 it isn't CHEAP cheap.

  • Normally Buy Bill's at Coles/Woolies

  • I only buy from my local bakery but have found many markets have an Artisian bakery selling yummy stuff now. Supermarket bread can be several days old when you purchase it.

  • I buy the Bakers Delight white sour dough loaf. It's accessible, freezes really well, and EVERY visitor who has eaten it in my home comments positively on it.
