Saw Pink Lady apples for $2/kg at Coles ringwood (VIC). Nearby Aldi has them for $3.50.
Possibly VIC only as the Coles online site shows them bit expensive.

They are picked in March and April, and they will be selling those right up to February.
I find they have a lot of surface bruising but are generally OK inside.
Guess my point is that there is a reason they are $2 a kilo.
However, if you are going to use them to cook into something (like an apple crumble) they'd be fine.
This is the market price that the supermarkets sell at a few times per year. Nothing to do with quality.
If you shop at a market you can get similar prices regularly. If not, be prepared to pay double or triple from Colesworth on most occasions. The quality won't vary.
And you'd be mad to use eating apples for cooking as they lack the acidity. Bramley cooking apples or similar. Otherwise you'll end up with tasteless mush.

What apple variety is best? I find Red Delicious to be tasteful.
Pink lady apples don't turn rust colored easily when cut and packed in kids lunch box.
Quality is pretty horrible at the moment.
