Virgin Mobile $19 Plan Increased to $30

I'm currently on the old $19 Virgin Mobile plan which includes $450 of calls and 1.5 GB of data (although I'm getting 2.25 due to a bonus offer some time ago).
From comments in deal posts, it sounds like this was a popular plan for Ozbargainers.

I just received an email to inform me that this plan is no longer available and I'm being switched to a $30 plan (i.e. a massive 57% increase).
The new plan offers some benefits (e.g. unlimited calls and texts), but I don't require this anyway so I'd being paying more for no reason.
In fact the new plan is worse from my personal perspective as it reduces the International calls to $25 per month instead of being included in the $450 from the old plan.

It sounds like it's time to jump ship from Virgin after being a customer for the past 10+ years.
Anybody care to suggest a suitable alternative plan? I'm guessing other Ozbargainers would also be looking at moving.

I don't require much in the way of calls (I typically used around 1/3 of the $450 allowance).
Data is more important to me than calls. I normally use around 1.5GB of data - although more would be a nice bonus.

  • Jumping ship is no big deal, just port your number.

  • Whatever happened to grandfathering plans?. I'm still in an old Woolworth plan when they were still with optus, a few years back now.

Teleco's rarely let you keep old plans for long now once you are out of contract.
example: Vodafone is moving people off the plans with the 300 international minutes to any country within months of their contracts ending.
There is usually a reason why the plans are not sold… and that reason is usually profit

  • well, I hope they change the name of the plan to "Virgin Mobile $30 Plan "

  • Wait I haven't received such email yet? When did you get it?

    • Wow they don't like giving away anything for nothing! I reckon a bonus five days per year is not exactly unreasonable seeing as you are paying $240 upfront. I get that it is 12 x 30 days, but it is still enough to make it hard for people who need dates to remember..

I just got the same email today, weighing up my options here but talked to them and they're not looking at any sort of customer retention so might jump ship to Kogan Mobile while the deal is alive

For the sake of $19 a month I'm not surprised they aren't looking at retention; if you happen to need help for an hour one month that's your entire phone payment gone on a wage.

Both my wife and I have been with virgin for over 10 years, so at $19 per month that's over $4500. I can only recall contacting their support once during that period. You are right that maybe that one call may have cost them a month's payment, but that's a rounding error in the whole scheme of things.

        • They may have made over $4500, but their profit from you is rubbish. They know you need a plan, so if you stay they earn more profit, if you go, it's no big loss.

Maybe Optus Sim only plan? Used to be $ 30 per month with 2GB data, right now is $25 per month with 3GB data, and unlimited talk and text in Au.

Try exetel - $14.99/month for 1.5gb data, unlimited national, sms calls

  • It's a real pain they did this, although Iwas starting to feel like I was paying the lazy tax a bit.

I jumped to Aldi as my usage varies a lot, my SO is going to iiNet.
