Would You Still Buy a Galaxy S7 in 2017?

As the S9 may come out early in 2018, is it worth buying an S7?

My main reason for changing phones I my camera is ok but not great on the current phone. By all accounts the s7 and s8 have identical camera setups (or as close as makes no difference).

I prefer smaller handsets so the 5.1 vs 5.8 doesn't concern me in screen size, but I'd like decent battery life (A day of use), a good camera, and a phone that's not too slow. currently use a P2 from the UK with band 28 etc and the SD625 is fine, battery is unbeatable, but camera is only ok.

A shop near me is selling a boxed unused unlocked (ex optus) S7 for $399, so pretty cheap, and it's got the balance of AU warranty

S7 for $399 is a no brainer. You could go with Xiaomi Mi6 if you want a top-end device that's smaller, but you'll lack local warranty and some LTE bands.

Other possible options include Oneplus 5 but it's a 5.5" device, display apparently not amazing (but most consider OK) and it has no SD card slot.

$399 for a brand new, local stock S7 is incredibly cheap. I don't believe I've seen new AU stock ever be posted that low here. I would be very sceptical of that store.

But yes, it's a great phone and would have no hesitations buying one now. AU models can also be flashed with custom ROM's for when they stop being support down the line.

thats a fantastic price. S7 is still a great phone.

  • I got grey import for S7 edge for about $540 about 2 months ago and very happy with it, camera excellent and OS speedy. Upgraded from a Xiaomi Mi5s plus that died after 6 months, only thing I miss about that is QC3 and the greater MAH capacity. Did recently break the screen so up for the $270 to repair on the edge so make sure you get protection for it nothing worst than a beautiful screen that looks like webbing.

  • it's got the balance of AU warranty

What does this mean? If it is unused it should have full warranty shouldn't it?

OP and everyone else… just remember that the new phones have a different aspect ratio!

I only say this so that you are informed, not fooled. So that you know that the new phones aren't as large as you may think.
Mathematically, the more "square" a device is, the larger its area is.
The standard 16:9 display is a lot square-er than the new 19:9 displays.
A rule of thumb to use is to remove 0.5inches from the new displays to show its proportionality to the standard displays.
    Eg/ A 6" 19:9 display ~ 5.5" 16:9 display.
….OR simply go off the WIDTH of the device instead

And to show what I mean, here's the numbers:
    LG G5: w6.60cm, 77.44cm2, 16:9, 5.3"
    LG G6: w6.47cm, 83.84cm2, 18:8, 5.7"

    LG V20: w7.10cm, 89.57cm2, 16:9, 5.7"
    LG V30: w6.82cm, 92.90cm2, 18:9, 6.0"

    SG S7: w6.35cm, 71.70cm2, 16:9, 5.1"
    SG S8: w6.44cm, 85.38cm2, 19:9, 5.8"

    Note 6 FE: screen width 7.10cm, 89.57cm2, 16:9, 5.7"
    Samsung Galaxy Note8: w7.00cm, 100.73cm2, 19:9, 6.3"

The new long form-factors, especially from LG, look cool.
However, the standard 16:9 displays are actually superior when talking objectively.

Any more info/links etc? I'd be curious in getting one.

Me too; especially since the OP states he is from Sydney :)

      • Please let me know which shop is selling the phone. Need to get one for my brother birthday :)

Sure, I'll let you know if I ever know :D

  • S7 with the front facing finger scanner is an upgrade to the back facing finger scanner of the 8+ series'

    • I find the fingerprint scanner on the s7 slow and slightly inaccurate though. I compared it to the Nexus 5x, and the more recent Xiaomi flagships, the s7 only gets it right roughly 6 out of 10 times.

      • Try doing that with the 8 while it's sitting on a charger or table. It'll get it 0 out of 10.

  • For that price, I wouldn't think twice. The S7 is still a stellar phone, with an excellent camera. I heard battery life took a slight hit after Nougat though. The size of the phone is also ideal. I use both the S5 (which is basically the same size as the S7) and the S8+ on a daily basis and prefer the S5 for it's ease of one-handed usage.
