Easter Island via Tahiti OR via Santiago

Hello.

I have been looking in to fares from Sydney to Easter Island for a number of years now.

First off very few, if any, RTW fares either include Easter Island or when they do are way too expensive.

The cheapest way seems to be Sydney-Santiago return + Santiago-Easter Island return. [Flying hours: 27hrs+10.5hrs=37.5hrs]
(Usually $1100 on special plus $570 so making it about $1670).

The slightly more expensive (but maybe more interesting way is via Tahiti)….

Sydney (via Auckland) - Tahiti return + Tahiti-Easter island return. [Flying hours: 6.5hrs+11hrs+11hrs=28.5hrs]
(Usually $1200 on special + $630 so making it about $1830).

Tahiti is apparently expensive to stay.

Has anyone done either of these trips? And if so, what was the travel like?

thanks.

PS. if anyone can suggest a cheaper way please do.

long way to go to look at some heads.

if you want my opinion tahiti is expensive and pointless, just go to another similar country thats cheap, like samoa.
easter island was a waste of money and time.

  • There is a reciprocity fee for Australians charged at Santiago Airport. I have been there (but not easter island) and enjoyed it, but the fee is a bit high for just a short stay (not blaming Chile, i understand it is reciprocal to AU govt charges - us and Mexico are the only two left paying it)

You don't pay this if you enter via other ports so via Tahiti will save you that.

  • Have you been yet? I only just saw this. I have done syd-tahiti-easter island-chile…. return after trip in s. America.. santiago-syd via auckland…

    • No. It was too hard. (And not cost effective).

Instead I went to Peru only. (SYD-SCL-LIM return)

      It was great.

    • Unfortunately there are no Tahiti - Easter Island flights at the moment.

I might end up going by cruise ship if I get any older.
