Insurance for Youngsters?

So junior is getting his first car, he's 18 no accidents, disqualifications, fines or claims. Is one insurance company better than the other or are they all the same?

Cheers

I used to drive a crapper back then under $10k and just go third party fire theft. Worth it and mostly same same

My first car would double in value when I filled the petrol tank.

    No

Cost is a bigger determinant. If you have 2 companies at a similar price point, it might be worth asking about peoples experiences with both companies.

They are all basically the same - quote it up and see who is cheaper.

  • Youi has no age or inexperienced driver excess, just the base excess. But the monthly price is about on par with everywhere else.
I'm with them because I only got my license at 19 and am 23 now so fall under both under 25 and driving less than 5 years, but I've not had to make a claim so I can't confirm how good they are.
Their roadside assistance included in comprehensive has been good to me though.

    • Spoke to Youii and they have a $500 age excess on top of the usual excess charge.

Thanks for all the replies, will do some ringing around.

      • Must be a new policy then, when I renewed earlier this year and said why should I stick with them and not go elsewhere they said since I'm under 25 I'll have an age excess everywhere else but not with them.
Googled it to find out if it changed, don't know what this site is or how often it updates but they still list no age excess unless the driver is unlisted: https://mozo.com.au/insurance/car-insurance/youi/Comprehensi…

        • Hey thanks for that link, I'll bring that up with them if we go ahead with a policy.

@EightImmortals: It's the only reason I ever went for them, and was something they always bring up when I negotiate price. If they've dropped that and won't let me keep it next renewal I'll probably go elsewhere.

Having a look on my policy now, my excess is $775 with no other excesses listed, and if I go to special conditions it says
"An additional Unlisted Driver Excess applies to all claims where the driver of the car at the time of the incident was not recorded as the REGULAR driver or a LISTED driver on the Policy Schedule."
No mention of any other excesses.

Should definitely be able to hold them to this, say they've offered in the past and friends and family have it now.

If you trust your son is responsible, its cheaper to insure the car yourself and have the minimum driver age as 18. Heaps cheaper, downsides is he will need to wait to get a better personal rating and if he does have an incident it will impact all your policies.

    • Won't work. Since both drives reside at the same residential address, junior must be listed on the policy too. They wouldn't pay out otherwise

Get him to do this course. I did it when I first started driving. Was quite educational.

You get a 10% discount on your policy after.

  • So junior is getting his first car, he's 18

Let him buy the vehicle. Register the vehicle in you name. Buy insurance in your name and add his name to the policy.
