Howsabout them eBay sales? Opinions? New tactic: POSTAGE PRICE JACKING

Is it just me, or are a majority of the ebay sales are just there to entice the consumer in to browsing items, rather than an actual sale where items are discounted from median RRP?

This is just an example

Never really borthered me, until things stared to be cheaper outside of the sale…
not taking a stab at warehouse1, but that is their price for the ds216

$326.50 anytime at website…
or
$327.37 during an eBay 20% off 'sale'

What do other people think?

I just lol to myself most of the time

UPDATE: 7/9/17 Well looks like one seller figured out how to bypass discounts by jacking up postage prices
LOL

Look at the price as pertains before the sale. Add items you want to buy to the watchlist and add a note about the price. Then when sale comes, check price was not raised to compensate for discount. Only way.

All the suppliers are basically buying from the same place for that Synology NAS.

Selling directly from your own website like warehouse1 is doing, has lower overheads. Selling via 'ebay' has the ebay tax of 10% + 3% paypal.

Then you have these 20% ebay 'sales' that the discount is split 50/50 between ebay/seller which basically means the seller is supplying the entire discount (10% ebay fees, then 50% of the 20% discount).

    • They're a large store so they would have much better fee rates.

      • yes 'better', but not great. The 20% sales are still 50/50 split. Its part of being part of them.

So a business after paying a $550 monthly fee for the top with lowest % fee, you're still looking at around 6.4% on the final fee for this item

    • wasn't directly about the NAS, but more about the nature of ebay sales these days..

I do price check things at times, but now it's more of an inconvenience shopping at ebay because of flooded listings or other garbage not in correct categories….

then theres the $1.00 items that have options to purchase… but they're actually out of stock for the item you query, but the 1.00 accessories are available.. and so is the most expensive item

sales are just there to entice the consumer in to browsing items

I don't understand, isn't that how sales work? What is your argument exactly?

    • I don't understand, What is your argument exactly?

The argument is, the 'sale' isn't really a sale.

ebay price is $327.37 AFTER the eBay 20% off.

      VS's

$326.50 for the anytime price at warehouse1.

A true 'sale' has a cheap item to get you in, on the off chance you buy something else. This sale, fails to do that.

eBay has a buyer/seller issue. Lots of private/small sellers are turning to facebook groups/gumtree after they get burnt after the first few sales on ebay taking 11% (private people get charged GST on the 10% now), paypal taking near 3%.

So some poor person sells a $300 item, then gets hit with a $9 paypal 'fee', and a $33 ebay 'fee', so kisses $42 goodbye.

For me, ebay isn't much better than 'amazon' these days. As most items are BIN, gone are the days of auctions and finding bargains. Yes they are still there, but not like the old days.

Its all just companies selling at fixed prices.

The stores are pricing products at what people are willing to pay. Percentage sales are not new, you would be naive to think they don't do this at brick and mortar stores too.

When you purchase something, it is up to you to do the research and then vote with your wallet. When I see a store raise a price during a sale, I don't take it personally. I just take my business somewhere else.

        • Didn't read what I wrote hey?

Both places are the same price after 'discount'. Why that is? Could it have something to do with the wholesale price maybe and the need to cover costs? ;)

      • exactly, its not a sale anymore, well if you really wanted to get to the etymology… I guess so.
but definitely not a discounted sale anymore

EBay sales are 99% hype 1% actual deals.

I never get why so many Ozbargainer's fall for it.

Only the true deal hunters on this site know how to shop a deal and not open their wallets every time the word sale is announced.

Historical lowest price guys. Historical lowest price and compare.

The eBay sale treasures finds rates have been decreasing recently.

My only look forward to sales for this year is really only Black Friday and Christmas/Boxing day/New year's etc.

  • Site wide 5-20% sales can be pretty decent.

Selected stores sales are not worth the time most of the time.

  • Sitewide is fine, selected stores is a scam and i go out of my way to avoid all stores that pricejack, even when the sales arnt on.

  • I like it

  • yeah site wide is good

  • I thought this one was good..
