Would The Current Top NBN Hardware We Now Enough for Future 1gpbs Speeds?

Im just curious as the top consumer right now is 100/40 for NBN but the ISP provider MyRepublic is boasting their 1Gbps speeds, now what exactly is different hardware side with what we have now (100/40 NBN) to what they have (MyRepublic 1Gpbs stuff)

I have FTTP NBN, in the future if TPG decides to go 1gbps, is what I have now capable of reaching those speeds?

thanks

  • You have FTTP, so yup when available you can get 1gbps :)

The NTD (network termination device) can almost certainly to 1Gbps.

Your wifi router and other wifi devices probably can't. Your computer(s) probably can't sustain 1Gbps writes to disk. It can probably stream that on a wired connection.

    • Pretty much this. An investment will probably be required to sustain that data rate through your network.

    • yea pretty much most of our stuff will not take full advantage of the speeds but this is where "Australia" needs to be heading regarding net speeds, Im just curious that if one day TPG or other ISP provider decides to give the few of us with 1GBPS, i can and no need to spend much on infrastructure

    • Most hard drives can actually do 1Gbps pretty easily. All SSDs in laptops/desktops would be able to and most of the modern smartphone disks can as well.
To put things in comparison: 1Gbps is just 120MB/s. I have an SSD in my laptop that can sustain 2000MB/s writes (16x faster, or 16Gbps).

My wifi can push out 1.3Gbps theoretically but likely won't be able to push all of that gigabit out. Wired Ethernet can, however.

Also anyone with a DOCSIS 3.1 modem for HFC will have the hardware they need for future 1Gbps as well.

  • At my place we have the hybrid style NBN available……ie down the Foxtel cable to the premises….curious to know if that would that get a user over the line at least feed-wise with 1GB?

      • +1

Thnks agret. I must say that when I see "lab test" the I'll believe it when I see it nerve quivers…a lot.

    • If you want to have a look at some D3.1 speed tests from Comcast users in the US.

edit to correct the link: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30960001-Speed-Report-DOCSI…

Also D3.1 FDX standard has been completed allowing symmetrical 10Gbps as a further upgrade path.

      • Thanks sir_bazz……..isn't it good that we can keep the world at arms length by having our access restricted to 10% of that or even less.

Who says the "tyranny of distance" no longer exists?

        • Well it's also good to see what speeds we should expect to be getting when NBN finally get around to upgrading our HFC network to D3.1 It's now pushed out to be available late next year. :(
