(Unmetered) Netflix Casting to Big Screen

I'm on Optus mobile with unmetered Netflix. I suspect the Netflix app now detects if you are casting and blocks the video. I only get audio, subtitles and controls being casted. This use to work until recently. Does anyone have a solution?

Since I can download the shows in the Netflix app, the unmetered part isn't that important. Need some way to display on big screen.
I have tried SideSync to a PC and it does the same.
Miracast with my TV box and it does the same.

  • What device are you using - a phone or a tablet? Can you buy a suitable cable and simply mirror your screen to the big TV instead without having to use Miracast or Chromecast?

    • Tried via cable (Samsung SideSync) to PC and same issue. Going to try using old version of Netflix v4.12.2 build 1444 tonight because this use to work from my mobile (optus unmetered mobile TV)to my MXQ box.

So then it must be a DRM issue with either your device or your version of netflix. Potentially you could get unmetered if you used your current device as a wifi hotspot instead and used another device plugged into the TV to run netflix.

      • I tried Netflix v4.12.2 build 1444 last night and I still have the same problem. Apart from the Netflix versions, my Note4 also had updates done so maybe it is that. I wonder if anyone else experienced this.

  • If you are casting (Chromecast I presume), you are using your local wifi internet that the Chromecast is connected to. You can't stream from your phone (optus Mobile) using your phone's data to your TV unless you are using Airplay (Apple TV).

Not sure if you mean your home Mobile Broadband is on Optus mobile, or your mobile phone is Optus mobile.

    • It doesn't matter. Netflix no longer has the cast button and they have blocked casting. https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/5r3l1y/sa…

      • Yeh screen mirroring is blocked by most content providers. I would get a Chromecast, they are awesome. I have many TV devices, but always default to the Chromecast. Xbox One also supports Chromecast.

        • From what I have read, video won't cast over to Chromecast either now. I have no problem with mp4s stored on my SD card. Pretty sure its the app now

        • @Popo: I can't comment on that with your phone. I have an iPhone and it works great, but streaming won't work with downloaded shows http://bgr.com/2016/11/30/netflix-download-app-chromecast-ai…. Netflix is one of the key apps on Chromecast so I would be surprised if Chromecast button doesn't work anymore….

Chromecast is an independent device, it just grabs the URL from your phone to know what to stream, it then goes to your Wifi itself and starts streaming from the internet on your Wifi (or you could set this up as your phone's hotspot). You could turn off your phone and it will continue streaming. This is probably your best bet.

        • @McBanjo: I wonder if that means the stream now becomes metered as it is no longer streaming via the app on the device with the sim card.

        • @Popo: it will absolutely be metered unless the chromecast is set to use your mobile data with a hotspot.

  • How about a Chromecast? I hate the damn things but might do what you need.

you could use the mobile as hotspot and stream directly from tv / appletv / chrome cast.

    • Apparently, Optus says that would become metered data. Don't know how they figure out whether its coming from my phone or through my phone.

Unmetered media was designed to be watched on the device so casting and hot spotting is not supported.

There might be a way if you had a Windows tablet. Watch Netflix via the browser and use the "Connect to a wireless display" feature of Windows 10.

    • It use to work. I'm hoping to reachout to anyone who may have experienced the same loss of functionality or alternate solution.
But you've given me a working idea.
I have an old laptop that has a SIM slot. I should just stick it into that and connect it to the TV.

      • Cool, let me know how it goes.
