i buy one from whatever country i'm in

    • This. In most countries, prepaid plans are cheaper than in Australia and in all countries they are cheaper than roaming.

Unless you are staying for less than 24 hours, it's usually worth it.

    Go here:

All the info you need to get a local sim.

  • It really depends where I plan to travel.
Sims are usually useful by region.
EU Three UK Sims seem to be popular.
Asia: Starhub Singapore is really good.

  • I bought a Three UK SIM a few years ago, and it has been really handy. Hong Kong, USA, UK, most of Europe. I top up online from the seller I bought the SIM from, as you need a UK card to top up directly from Three. I usually go with the GBP10 add-on which gives you 1 GB over 30 days.

  • I just buy a card in whatever country I'm in.

The 'one fits all' options are pretty bad. Three UK is fine but the speeds outside the UK are terrible.

  • I've used Arieli Mobile sim card for our trip to USA. We stayed mostly in NYC and had no problems with connection. Just make sure you buy at least 2 weeks prior to departure as it took about 11 days for delivery to Melbourne

  • Given you are not allowed to buy sims for voice calls in
Paris, Japan and some countries in Europe
I always just for a Vodafone M2M sim with $5 roaming
Also means I can get sms from my bank etc for internet banking while overseas etc

  • I just buy a SIM card in the country I'm going to. It's almost always the cheapest option.

  • What is the best option for buying in Aus for use in UK before going?

While the best option is to buy when you get there, what options are there? I've used the Woolies one before and Ms Rover used the Auspost, but they seem pretty cheap.

I told Ms Rover to get one in the UK but she would like her tech support muggins to install and test beforehand.

I imagine no data use and a couple of calls and texts to Au per day.

  • Heads up for anyone travelling to Europe. If you buy a sim in any EU member country and want to travel around other EU countries you won't get charged Roaming fees, Roaming is free within the EU
