Wow, seems cheap. Obviously, the right website putting it here on OzBargain. ;)

I liken North Face to Bang and Olufsen. They make products that look amazing but functionally they don't justify their price most of the time. Also, as per Bang and Olufsen in hifi tech, where 10 years ago they did have some leading edge technology going in to their products, things haven't changed much in the outdoor clothing industry so the cheaper brands have caught up and now make them look even more expensive. They were huge in the UK before I moved out here because they made outdoor clothing cool to wear but that fad has somewhat worn out (excuse the pun)

I don't know about Bang and Olufsen but I agree that The North Face is overpriced. The durability is better than bottom of the end rivals but functionality is mostly not leading the pack in majority of items. There are some pieces that are good but alternatives are a little better generally, although not as easily available in Australia as their use in Australia is almost non-existent. It's very much a fashion brand of outdoor wear industry. There are only a couple of brands that I think can justify their high asking price but this is not one of them!

A while ago they were industry leaders, but they seem to cater more to fashionistas now. However, their summit series line of products is reliable outdoor gear (albeit expensive), and if you know what you're looking for they do make some great products.

Also they appear to be a relatively responsible company in terms of nature conservation, which I find appealing (not appealing enough to sped $280 on this).

          @wittyusername:
Yeah their summit range is where I think they become a consideration. At that price there is a lot of other choices and I have kept picking someone else over them. For examples; extreme weather warmest gloves/mitts are a bit cheaper by outdoor research or nicer quality by hestra. Similar with jackets, Arcteryx or Patagonia are Eco focused and cost about the same depending on what you want.

There are a few Scandinavian brands as well a couple more US and UK that I have considered over time and I have really struggled to see where TNF item came out on top or cost significantly lower than another choice.

I had to buy a lot of -40 gear and the only thing I have from TNF are thick glove liners because they were the warmest touch screen gloves (they are gloves but at that temperature they were liners haha).

Maybe for the city TNF warm parkers would be good and look good enough for city life but most of Australia is not that cold. It's a brand that I almost want to like but keep thinking their target is being readily available!

I owned the hooded version of this jacket and had to return it because it leaked feathers. I do however own the Thermoball and think that is better build quality even though it's a synthetic. Ideal for city conditions.

My go-to-gear is pretty much all Arc'teryx, Rab and Outdoor Research. Rare to find bargains on these but they do come up.

        • @Moostyle:
Where do you look for Arcteryx bargains? The best I have seen in Aus is 20% off. Otherwise it's overseas. I also need xs so that makes it trickier.

What's Rab like? It looks decent in stores but I don't own anything of theirs.

I like Patagonia clearance store, it would be nice to have similar thing for Arcteryx. I have been told Arcteryx limit their production runs with the intent of keeping stock low so it doesn't have to be on clearance shelves (if possible) as it ideally would sell out before end of season.

I'm a Paddy Pallin member and the odd members sale do come up. Generally always 20% off everything. I also bought 2 Arc'teryx Cerium when they were on Clearance on the site.

          http://www.paddypallin.com.au/clearance/arc-teryx-clearance.…

Rab is good. I have the Nucleus hooded fleece since I'm allergic to Merino (the Icebreaker ones gave me a rash).

Trek and Travel in Sydney used to give me discounts. I did go instore and ask if there's any discount if I paid in cash and got 15% off my Arc'teryx Zeta AR and my wifes Theta Jacket. This was over 12 months ago.

I also bought a his and hers Arc'teryx Theta Bib from Larry Adlers over a year ago.

Sales do come up but you have to check them constantly.

I also have used BigAppleBuddy to get outlet outdoor gear shipped to Australia from the USA. Heaps of bargains out there but just have to constantly check websites.

          CampHikeClimb generally has good bargains.
