I have an Epson EH-TW9200W projector that I use in my living area as an everyday TV and absolutely love it.
Who can complain watching the footy on a 120" screen?
Although this model has been superseded by the EH-TW9300W, they come with a 3 Year projector & GLOBE warranty.
The newer model is even better as it does have 4K enhancement. Not native 4K but it looks good.4K projectors are not worth it IMO at this stage however will drop over time. But then you have to factor viewing distance where the eyes can perceive 4K correctly. No point buying a $15K 4K projector and you sit 7 meters away! Your eyes won't tell the difference so you might as well buy the 1080p.
Pros:
Excellent image quality and blacks.
The best 3D projector.
As the previous poster mentioned, you don't have to buy a screen and use my wall. (Dulux Natural White colour) It still looks fantastic! So don't get sucked in buying a $1K screen (unless you have dark walls)
Screen real estate. 120"
You don't break the screen like TV's accidentally which renders it useless. You just break the wall and can patch it up LOLCons:
Startup time takes usually a minute.
You need a separate TV tuner (A decent unit such as a HUMAX)
When you get light coming into the room, the image is bright but doesn't replace a TV and can look a little washed out by the ambient light shining on the wall.
Installation. Although wireless, you still need to securely mount it and provide power. However, this is priced similar to a 55" OLED TV but you get the screen realestate… and also warranty! Not a paltry 12 months like the others lol
I have been using it for 2 years everyday and still going strong.
Cheers
I've got an Acer H6520BD projector. Has worked exceptionally well since we bought it 2-3 years ago. Full HD, 3D as well. Use it with a pull-down Acer 90 inch screen which works well. The projector has some good features like auto keystone (aligns the image for you automatically), short throw (and reverse throw as well if you want to hide the projector), a bunch of other stuff.
I would probably recommend a wall over a pull down screen as the wall can't get blown about and it can get in the way a bit going in and out of the room. But our wall space wasn't big enough.
My wife and I use it every week to watch movies from the Xbox blu-ray/netflix/Plex and get everyone around at State of Origin to watch the footy. Occasionally use it to play xbox games as well which is awesome. Now with a RetroPie (raspberry pi emulator box) plugged in I can play a bunch of old arcade games on the big screen too.
The best cinema is the one in your own home because you can drink beer, pause to go to the toilet and have your own snacks! We absolutely love it.
I bought the projector online from an Australian mob but can't remember who it was.
Thanks everyone for your time sharing your experience.
I used to have a projector in India. I used a screen because my home had yellow painted walls. If you have a white wall, then not much use buying a screen.
Here was my setup. It was cheap but I loved it. I miss my setup!

Personally just use a white wall. You can get a brighter image in a particular direction with a purpose designed screen, but to me just having a blank wall so it 'disappears' is more useful. Of course you can have a roll down, but then you have the mechanism, etc.
4K projectors are still stupidly over priced, so 1080p is the thing. At 3m diagonal, and typical viewing distances, it's still OK.
And getting them from overseas can make the price more palatable.
