How Do You Protect Your DSLR?

I'm not thinking about when you're somewhere where you're taking photos, but on a plane, train, bus etc.

I have a Nikon D5500 (pretty small) with 2 lenses and a charger. I was thinking of making an insert for my various bags since I'm reasonably handy with a sewing machine, but what do other people use?

I have had a dedicated bag but it only just fit a body and one lens, so no go anymore.

  • How about you buy a bag specifically for that model camera?

    Quilted wraps?! really?

    • Do you mean like a pelican case with cut out foam? Seems a bit pricy.

There's no Nikon case made specifically for this camera, and even if there was that kind tend to only fit the one lens, and it has to be attached to the body, like this one.

Yes, wraps are a thing you can use. Seems thin to me, but maybe some people like that?

      • Hard cases for equipment aren't that pricey, check Bunnings and Supercheap Auto, especially when on sale or with an eBay coupon etc. Look for "Safe Case". They will include pick and pluck foam where you can pull out small centimeter-sized blocks to make pretty much any shape to suit your camera/lenses. Make the hole slightly smaller than the camera, and allow it to be snug. The equipment will mould to the hole in time and it will look like a bought one. I have one for my D5100 and seven lenses, charger, flash, gadgets and accessories. Make a hole to suit a small plastic box which can store all those irregular/loose/small objects like batteries, lens cloth etc.

        • Wow only $30 sounds pretty good!

@lupiter: Here you go: http://img.gg/stNKJ1G. I just happened to have a spare of that exact case lying around. It contains a Nikon D5100 with 18-55 kit lens with hood. You should just about get the second lens and charger in there too.

    By never using it.

It's collecting dust somewhere on a shelf in my house

    • :D That's certainly how many other people I know keep theirs.

      • i just use it inside around the house always with a lens filter attached, don't dare to shoot it outside.

        • Afraid of breaking your lens filter? Fair enough :P

        • @lupiter: Yes! Always give the filter a nice microfibre polish after each use.

  • Have a rear access only backpack, that way you can carry it around without worrying about someone accessing it. Can also compartmentalise the bag to suit the camera and lenses

    • How much gear do you have? I'm not a pro wedding photog or anything :) if I got a bag like that my SO would think I was planning on acquiring a lot more gear.

      • I have one of the smaller bags. Only keep camera, two standard lenses and a couple of cables and filters in the bag. It is more for protection and ease of carrying it around. Also very secure when in other countries with only the rear access panel.

  • There are some decent bags on amazon. There's no point having the kit if you don't protect it. Besides if you ever upgrade the body, the new one will still fit in your bag

    • If the body is a similar size anyway :). But yes I assume the person who voted "nothing I just shove it in my bag and get a new one when it breaks" was having a joke.

  • Google "Caseman" camera bag.

    • You mean like this one? Clever design.

      • Yep, I got AOS2, AW01 & AW02. Quality made camera bag with rain coat and adjustable inners. Bought em from this reseller.

They claimed its designed in OZ but no store sells em here. Lol

  • Mine's in its box inside a box full of bags of air which is inside a bigger box full of packing peanuts that is bubble wrapped inside a humidity controlled cabinet locked inside a large safe located in my bunker.

    • I'm sure after the nuclear winter clears everyone will marvel at it.

    Bikies!

    What's a DSLR?

Ah! I use a Jim Beam bag.
Room for all the bits and pieces.
    Zips open.
    Does the job.

    • Basically just a cheap cooler drinks/lunch bag? Good idea. Combo with the stubby holders below for the complete beer camera solution.

  • Fstop make ICU's which might be something you could make yourself if you felt so inclined. I use a camera bag for carrying more than a couple lenses. Otherwise I'll just carry with a strap and throw it in a backpack.

    • They look quality. I was thinking of making something pretty much like that, yeah (probably not as nice).

    .357 Magnum

  • I often use stubby coolers to protect lens' when chucking the camera in a different bag. Added protection, don't look like a lens if people get into your stuff & you always have a stubby cooler when you need a cold frothy….

    • Excellent idea!

  • Carry it on a sling strap behind your back, no need for a dedicated bag, unless you want to carry extra lenses or are worried it might rain.

    • I'm asking about packing it on a car/flight/train (hand luggage of course)… not when taking photos. A strap is best when you want to use it :).

      • Why not an insert in your regular luggage then? Aliexpress search for DSLR insert has dozens of options under $15.

i have bikies on call whenever i use it

  • I have a small camera case that fits the DSLR and the current lens. I have a neoprene lens case too.
If I want lens options I take the camera in the usual bag and put the lens in my backpack, or sometimes my spouses handbag if I am not carrying another bag.
I bought a bigger camera bag to accommodate a couple of lenses, but found it too bulky to carry all the time.

I also bought a long zoom in the hope of using one lens when on holiday etc. but the image quality and lack of a very wide short aperture left me disappointed.
FWIW, I solved the problem by getting a Fujifilm x100 as my walking around camera, so I only take the DSLR for things like weddings or parties and just keep a fast lens on it.
You will note this approach hasn't delivered very acceptable landscape or tele results, but it does great street photos, and pretty portraits, so I guess that is what I am now!

  • I put my camera in a wet bag inside the backpack. I find a backpack with good back support has decent padding at the back so I just gotta make sure soft stuff covers the side and the front of the bag. I travel with small kid so I have plenty of soft materials (change of clothes, muslin cloth etc).

    • Any reason you'd do this over just listing it on your home & contents insurance?

      • Trov allows you to Switch Cover On and Off.

You can pay Daily or Monthly.

If you don't have Home and Contents cover, it allows you to have cover for your Camera.

        • If you have a home and it has contents, you should at least be insuring the contents, even just clothes. I guess maybe this would cover you if you bought cheap travel insurance? But I'd rather just pay the extra travel insurance, Trov was quoting me $9/month just for the body, I can't see that being cheaper.

  • DSLR cameras are nice to have but way too bulky and heavy for travel.
Especially considering the quality of the cameras now installed into the latest Apple and Samsung flagship models.
Then you (maybe) only need a good quality compact travel zoom camera such as Lumix DMC-TZ series, Nikon Coolpix s7000/S9900, Canon Powershot SX series etc.

Not for me. I've tried super zooms and compacts, tried my phone, I can't swing it. I love my SLR, photography really is a hobby for me (even when not travelling) and I'm not going to leave it at home.

But for all my friends and family I would tell them just to take their phone ;)

  • Padded backpack that is meant for cameras.

  • I've just purchased one of these for my camera and gear
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crumpler-LDFBP-006-Delight-Foldableā€¦
Otherwise I have a neoprene case for the SLR that I put around it to protect it from bumps
