Qantas / Westpac Altitude Black 80,000 QFF Points Deal - Two Cards??

Hey All,

Can I just check something please, with those of you who have recently applied for the Westpac Altitude Black QANTAS 80,000 FF rewards points card?

Two weeks ago, I applied online via Westpac, for the Westpac Altitude Black QANTAS rewards card - the one with the current promo of 80,000 QANTAS FF reward points if you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months on the card. (I think it's different to the non-Qantas Westpac Altitude black card, where you get 80,000 Altitude points that are a different value to 80,000 actual Qantas points).

Anyway, I was successful with the application, and the envelope arrived today in the mail. When I opened it though, there were actually TWO cards inside - one is a Westpac-branded Altitude Black MASTERCARD credit card, and the other is a Westpac/AMERICAN EXPRESS-branded Altitude Black credit card. TWO credit cards from different entities entirely. Essentially, they look identical, except one has a Mastercard logo in the corner, the other has an AmEx logo there instead, and of course they each have entirely different main credit card number formats. Otherwise, they look identical.

I never asked for an AmEx credit card?! The application was just for a Westpac Qantas Altitude Black card. So my question is in reference to the $5000 3-month spend to get those 80,000 Qantas FF points.. What I want to know is:

There are TWO cards from independent companies - do I have to spend $10,000 now over 3 months cos there are two cards?? It looks as though the Westpac in-house Mastercard one isn't Qantas-branded (in fact neither of them have anything Qantas branded on them), so I figure they've just given me a run-of-the-mill Westpac black altitude card, that is entirely NOT the Qantas card I signed up for, and an Amex card to boot.

Can anyone here confirm if they signed up ONLY for the 80,000 point Qantas Altitude Black Westpac card and that's the sole card they got - 1 card only? If so, was it branded Qantas anywhere?

I'm only asking here because they can't work it out at my local Westpac branch!! They're more confused than me, which is saying something.

Thanks,
UniQualz

  • It's just two cards linked to the same account.

    https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

It's the same card regardless of if you choose Altitude Points or Qantas Points (see the "Rewards" tab).

  • they both charge to the same account, you just get more points on the amex. they show 2 cards on the website, don't understand how their staff can't work it out

    • The girl in the branch said "Oi, I don't git those stooperd card thingys!". So I just said "that's cool, OzBargain will sort me out.. I'll go ask them"!! :-D

So in other words the spend theory is: Use the AmEx one when possible, cos it's the one that rewards the actual Qantas points? And when I hit the $5k spend within 3 months on it, I'll get auto-rewarded with only Qantas points - NOT Westpac Altitude points? I don't want to end up with 80,000 Westpac points, that I then convert to Qantas points at a 0.6 rate or whatever hideous rate it is.. :-/

No mention anywhere of having selected Qantas Rewards, and not Westpac Rewards, seems odd.

Both of them rewards Qantas points. Amex just gives you more points per $ spent compared to the Mastercard one.

As for getting Qantas points or Altitude points, I believe you should have been given the choice when you signed up for the card. I signed up for this card 10 months ago so I can't say if anything has changed from since then.

Also, if I remember correctly, you can get the 2x complimentary qantas lounge passes only by registering in a link somewhere on Westpac's site (google search will do the trick), and by spending money on any Qantas product.

Literally on the first view of the altitude black website has this in large text: Two cards linked to one account

It's usual practice for rewards credit cards to supply a Visa or Mastercard along with the Amex. This is so that you use Amex as much as you can, but have Visa/MC for vendors that don't accept Amex.

You only have to spend $5000 total on either of those cards.

    • Oh, righto, that's awesome, thanks very much, think I get it - duh. I have the AmEx Virgin Velocity Platinum 100k Virgin points card, which has Virgin branding on it, so that one was obvious to me. Alrighty.. I'll get going with spending $5k - lol! Thanks for EDUMERCATING me! ;-)

      • Haha np mate. Enjoy your 80000 QP!

don't forget to close the account once your bonus points come through, and then try again in 12 months time =)

    • That's it! ;-)

  • Anyway to get the card without the $195 fee?

    • Yes! My wife and I have a mortgage with Westpac and we have the Premier Advantage pack that costs $395 a year. The PA pack allows free credit cards, so we get this for nix.. *he says, conveniently forgetting about the hefty mortgage :-(

      • Annual is $195 first year. Guess the PA has some other fee wavers, rate discounts the big 4 make up. Wonder if u can grab the points then go again with the next tear down platinum etc.

  • lol

  • Anyone can suggest here how to quickly accummulate $5K spend? I paid rego for 1yr, water, electricity and gas what else can I spend on?

  • I'm sure when I signed up to the Westpac deal it was the latest promotion of spending $3,000 in 3 months, and not $5,000 but Westpac is convinced it was $5,000 when I signed up in May 2018.

Anyone else can confirm if this is true?
