Reckon the GRII deal is a good one.
Wish it was
GR mkII is a pretty old camera now, video capabilities is also lacking.
the dust issue and autofocus performance is the only thing holding me back from getting the GR II
why would you market a camera as pocketable if it sucks the fibers from your pants - Ricoh, leave the sucking to Dyson.
I pre ordered my GR mk1 for $859 in 2013.
Sent it back three times because of the dust issue. Other than that, GR is a great point and shoot DC.
is there anything you can do to avoid it?
Not really something you can avoid, but I stop noticing the dusk after the last clean. Maybe I am used to it or simply because I don't use it very often now…
Damn thats a shame, guess ill save for an x100f. Missing my x100s.
I have the GRII for a while now and don't really notice (or not bother enough) with the dust issue.
I was concerned initially when purchasing it as well but I'm not seeing any issues with my occasional shooting.
One thing I totally love with this camera that I don't feel the same way about any of the other in the market is its usability.
What's the point of having the camera when I don't feel bringing it anywhere (and one hand operation is a big plus).
With this camera I bring it with me way more often (not just the honeymoon period after buying it but till today) - and yes I fit it in my pant pocket.
I'd say go give it a try in any store to see how you feel :) I tried it out at DigiDirect before buying somewhere else cheaper :)
Nice find OP. A few things about the GRII - it's basically the same as the GR but with Wifi/NFC. According to rumours, and Ricoh's release cycle, there should be an announcement for the GR III this year, barring any setbacks. Both the GR and GR II have apparently a higher than normal chance of getting dust - although it should be noted that other fixed lens like the LX100 and Leica Q also suffer from this issue, although the fraction of affected users seems to be higher with Ricoh than other similar cameras. Some say the dust issue is due to a dusty environment, and when the GR/GRII turns on, the barrel extends causing a vacuum that 'sucks' in the dust, others say that the dust is already inside the sensor (i.e. dust spots from day 1), or a combination of both. One thing they seemed to have fixed with the GR II over the GR I, is the 'sticky shutter' issue where either the button became sticky or the aperture blades became sticky and failed to open - from my research, and reports from other users over at dpreview, it seems like no-one has encountered those issues with the new GRII.
Excellent camera, and very tempted, as a grey import with the 20% eBay Father's Day code is around the same price.
When you can get 20% off at dcexpert, 15% off is only useful for stuff not listed on eBay that you're desperate for.
I own the GR mkI and is indeed a good camera.
However the mkII doesn't have enough changes to warrant an upgrade.
Dust on sensor is an issue with these cameras (mine has 2 sensor dusts and shows up in images), also over $600 for a 16mp with a fixed lens is quite hard to swallow for most in late 2017 imo.
This thing should be selling at $400 instead.
