Koss Porta Pro Portable Headphones (Black Only) US $22.99 (AU $30.13) Delivered from Joybuy/JD.com

140

I was eyeing a set of these due to the reviews etc. but they are not cheap in Australia or even via Amazon.
They have a temple pad that is adjustable so are meant to be good for people wearing glasses as well.

I received a recent purchase from Joybuy today that was ordered on the 5/8/17 and they were exactly as describe, and fast shipping most likely faster to the mainland as being in Tassie shipping is usually slower by a couple of days at least.

PortaPros are really nice. That said, did you get an authentic one? There are fake ones out there. I once bought a fake one from Aliexpress.

    • I rather buy from amazon.
This and Koss KSC75 Portable sounds really decent for the price.

    • Yeah the price seems a bit too good to be true. I just emailed the Asian distributor for Koss, Artsound (the numbers at the bottom of the product page matches up with Artsound too, judging by some quick searches) to see what they know about this sale.

      • Any reply before I take the plunge?

    • Also, even if they are genuine, you won't get the lifetime warranty in Australia.

And the lifetime warranty is worth it. My first pair of Porta Pros developed a rattle in the right driver when the bass kicked in (after many years of use). Sent them in to the repair centre. Brand new pair sent back to me at no cost. Second pair still going strong years later.

But I guess you could buy two pairs with this deal for the same price as a single pair from a local authorised dealer.

      • I end up changing the drivers with KSC-75s when they break. It's a cheap way to fix it and I kinda like the sound of that slightly more.

    • Sorry, Australia not available please select another country.

      Eh?

I've always thought these are one of the ugliest headphones around….

    • They sound good though. Soundstage is very clear, represents vocal music and instruments very well.

I like them better than my Logitech UE4000's and in some respects more accurate than a Bose SoundTrue.

I own two sets of these head phones and the sound is quite reasonable, there are switches just above the cans to adjust headphone pressure against head.

I think historically this is the lowest price recorded here on ozb havent seen them posted as a deal on ozb in a while - had a quick search - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/koss-porta-pro

I have 2 pairs of those, got them from Amazon years ago. They are awesome at that price.

The only complaint I have is that the earpad foam doesn't last very long. And without the foam, it's quite uncomfortable with all the plastic sharp edges. And the original foam can be hard to find.

However, I found some unbranded china made foam in case anyone is looking for them as well. I am still waiting for my delivery, so I am not sure how good/bad they are.

    • Please pop back and let us know how the pads work out.

I actually bought these exact same ones 2 months ago, they took a month to come , must have been rerouted by mars, but anyways they are excellent, i thought why the hell have so many spares but at this rate and price too cheap not to get replacement ones. The original foam ones died slowly on me also.

  • What's the sound quality like?

    • +4

IMHO, these are easily the best headphones under $100. The sound quality is amazing for the price and the ease with which they can be driven. Perfect for portable devices.

There are decades worth of reviews by respected reviewers that back that up too.

I like the way Snrub thinks

      • i second this, by far the best sound for the price. The Koss are just easy, in that the sound they produce isnt fatiquing and are super light-weight with adjustable pressure on the ears so you can wear them for long periods of time. These are my favourite headphones for late night gaming sessions for the comfort reason along

check this link if you dont mind paying a bit more to add mic and remote controls (may arrive dec/Jan) https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-koss-porta-pro-x-hea…

The ksc75s are probably the benchmark of good cheap headphones - they are handsdown my favourite. This being said they offer no sound isolation so anyone sitting next to you on public transport will hate you.

  • Stupid question, but do they compare with Grado/Alessandro MS1? The latter cost about 3 times the price, so I wouldn't expect much from the Koss. You never know though. Any views?

    • I think these are cheap enough just to add to your collection.. if your talking about Grado's, then you should definitely have a headphone collection anyways :P

    • I've got both but haven't used either in about 3 years at least (I wear IEMs now):
      Sound:
Portapro: Plenty of bass and is punchy, great for dance and pop. Very fun to listen to. Small soundstage
MS1: treble and vocals are more pronounced. Great for rock. Wide soundstage

      Physically:
Portapro: can be folded up and taken on commutes. Open design means no isolation
MS1: don't bother taking these on commute with you. You'll need a DAC to drive them for starters and a lot of noise leaks out from them

I drove the MS1's using ASUS STX from my PC and used my Portapros for commutes (before I started using IEMs)

      • Grate info. Thanks!

      • Confirm on this, exaclty my Alessandros are top notch but need an small amp to get the best benefit and no good for commuting.

Portapro is 70's style looking but they are the best bang for buck you can get. Only thing that annoys me is my hair sometimes gets caught by a strand if i remove them too fast.

      • I don't have the Portapro but I can't imagine taking my MS-1s anywhere! They aren't exactly a super strong build, particularly for travelling! (Not saying they are flimsy crap either, just lots of opportunity to get mangled in a bag).

    • Glad to see lots of ozbargain community are using Alessandro headphone. It's a great headphone and im using my V20 phone to drive it on the go.

excellent price, but sadly I dont think this would fair well on public transport.. havent found anything better than IEM so far for public transport.

    "Portable headphones"…as opposed to…?

    • -1

It's really old model (from 80s), so there is that. I assume headphones back then were larger.

Anyways, there are headphones that are designed more for indoor usage. Like ones with really long cables or ones that don't fold up, along with other aspects that make a headphone less for outdoors.

      • Headphones, by definition, are like tiny little speakers for your head - they follow your ears around, wherever they may go. They're all portable.

        • I think it's referring to the fact they fold in on themselves so you can fit them in a smaller space.

        • +1

I assume you thought I negged you? I rarely neg, and most of the times it's for someone negging the deal for no adequate reason. In short, it wasn't me.

Anyways, what you are saying is true. That said, there are headphones that are just not suitable for using outside, ones that are less portable, as I mentioned before. I am guessing that headphones from 80s were larger as well and this model is from 80s.

Some literally cannot function without an amp, example would be electrostatic headphones. Some has long cable length, my HD600 I think came with 3m cable? Again with HD600, it is massive and it doesn't fold up so it'd take up a huge space if I want to carry it around.

  • Too bad it doesn't have a mic :(

    • +4

who needs a mic, when you can time travel back to the 80's with this retro looking headphones. Just need a portable walkman to make it complete :P

    • There is a three button version with mic for IOS called the KTC but it costs more.

    • massdrop special at the moment for KTC microphone version, $44 USD posted to AU with a 4 month wait

  • These are great headphones with a nice retro look, I think. Their best feature though is a lifetime warranty on repairs. Mine have had many repairs over the years, mostly the sound cuts out when the cable connection to the phone eventually breaks/wears loose. The lifetime warranty only applies if you buy from local authorised sellers though, so I think it makes more sense to pay a little bit more to start with and get your repairs for free.

  • wow! these are the best headphones from my ini days way back :) while I won't be getting a pair now, I have more than enough, but I recommend them to anyone! sound quality is so good!

  • Agree with all the positive reviews. Mine are over 10 years old and still sound fantastic!

  • These are good. I've had two pairs that the cabling on the plug had broken (due to using it with a phone in jeans pocket). I think it's probably the most common thing that goes wrong and the local distributor rightly will not exchange for free. Very easy to replace with a new plug if you can solder though.

  • Koss are awesome, ive had mine for over 5 years and have the replaced the cable twice now (easy solder job, broken due to snagging of cord on doorhandle)

    100% recommend these.

Massdrop now features a special upgraded version with mic/remote controls and reinforced cord (still have lifetime warranty) for those who dont mind the paying a little more and waiting until dec/jan to receive them

  • Good news, mine arrived today and they checkout as legitimate according to all the web sites on fakes and the Koss home page :)

    • Do you think its worth it? What colour did you buy? Was wondering if any of the colour comes with the hard case apart from the white model. Thanks for the update.

      • They are great, once you get the pads and length set right you could wear them all day as some of the pressure is off your ears.
Sound is very good but a touch more bass biased than I usually use, I suspect 99% of people would prefer the Porta pros because of this though :)

I am using them as my every day headphones on my computer due to the comfort and sound quality.

I bought the black ones, I was tossing up getting the red ones but my daughter was pleased I didn't as she thought the black ones were already ugly enough :)

        • Can't go wrong with black. Maybe you should get the red one instead. It would stand out more to amplify the retro beautifulness of the design LOL Glad you are enjoying it.
