Has Anyone Bought a Groupon Voucher from Groupon USA?

Hi all,

I'm travelling to honolulu next friday and wondering if anyone has purchased any groupons from the USA site?
Im unsure how i would make a purchase on the site and not get slammed a huge currency exchange fee… if anyone has had any experience with this, your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at these 2 packages;

  • Yea when i was in the NYC i got one to go to the ripplies believe it or not museum to compare it to the one in GC worked fine

    • did you use a standard Australian debit card and were the fees bearable?

      • Citi bank plus is the only card i use overseas

  • Yes we bought groupons in USA, UK and France. No problem. No fees with 28 degrees card.

    • thanks for the comment nissa, ill look into the card!

  • We bought heaps of Groupons for city tours, cruises, scenic flights etc. when we were over in the USA two months ago. Never had any problem.

The fees will be the same as if you were buying anything overseas, an international transaction fee plus whatever crappy exchange rate your bank sets.

What were you going to use for spending over there? Unfortunately it's probably too late to sign up for any of the no overseas transaction fee cards if you're leaving next Friday, but you could give the Citibank one a go. It doesn't cost anything so even if you don't get it in time it's handy to have around.

    • Thanks for all the info! My parents just got back from Europe and offered me their travel card to use while I'm over there, so I'll have to find out what the exact card is and go from there.
      Mugh purchase these tonight!

      • If its a travel card its probably a bad deal. They suck people in by saying things like 'no overseas transaction fees' but they charge ridiculous fees to put money on the card. Something like 3%. So if you put $2000 AUD on the card $60 in fees is gone instantly. It takes maybe a week or two to sign up, get the cards mentioned above and set them up, but its well worth it, no fees at all.

See Ozbargain's Guide to Cards with No Overseas Transaction Fees for more info.

    • Purchased both with the 20% off voucher for today only! paid $210 Australian for both for 2 people on each tour.

Happy with $110 a head with 2 full day tours.

  • +1

Also look at getting the entertainment book. They have a monthly subscription for the digital version there so you can purchase the first month at USD$1.99

Just don't forget to cancel when you leave (assuming you are not travelling there for more than a month).

    • Thanks for the info, is there any way to know the exact deals in the book rather than just the company names who are advertised?

      • Unfortunately not. But for the price of cup of coffee I think its worth it.

        • Yeh that's true. I could buy it in advance to access prior to going aswell.
