Had the same experience.
Same for Me, I paid $75 online from scoot website http://www.scootcruise.com/ for Sanur - Gili and $25 from a travel agency for Gili - Amed, though the level of safety and comfort you get is not the same for all of them.
Lonely Planet discourages using companies other than the one listed on https://www.gilibookings.com for safety reasons.
Said that, your ride will still be adventurous even with the big companies.
Serangan is the closest port from Nusa Dua. Padang bay and Amed are also good options given the boat ride is around 1 hour instead of 3+.
I'm going back in two weeks and I booked a $25 flight Bali-Lombok. From there short ride to Gili on public ferry which is only $3.
If u r taking the 35min flight from bali to lombok, dont forget about the 1.5hr vehicle trip to the jetti.
Edit. I caught a boat a few years ago from Padang Bai to Gilli Trawangan and it took approx 1 1/2hrs.
Could they be busy by then when i book last minute!
Unlikely that every boat is booked out unless you are going on a major public holiday or something.
Yes adventure is the name of the game alright. We have caught a number of boats in the past, and whilst some of the boats don't necessarily look like they may pass our standards (lack of lifejackets, a few leaks here and there, overcrowding etc.), These are very skillful captains and ferry the boats all day every day and are very familiar with the local conditions. So me personally I don't have an issue. Price like everything else is totally negotiable.
It's a lot cheaper to book it when you're there, than booking online. Go with one of the more popular ones, that have good reviews. Contact your accommodation in Bali and get them to book it for you.
