Opticoat or Nanolex? Will also take suggestions

So thinking of putting on some paint protection on a car. I know people with both Opticoat or Nanolex, and they both swear by their choice.

I'll admit that I'm pretty lazy when it comes to giving the car a wash, much less a proper wax so I'd need something to help reduce the frequency of washes.

Something that can be DIY would be great, but getting someone to put it on may be acceptable (if the price is right!)

    • How presumptuous of you to think I haven't checked with Mr. Google.

      • You posted a question on here that would have been answered faster by Googling. If you had have googled first, then your post here would not have been required.

You mentioned nothing about the current condition or age of the vehicle. Is it for a new car or a 13yo shitheap corolla? On the latter, the paint protection would cost more than the car itself.

As an ex car salesman, one thing I loved selling was "paint protection" to gullible buyers. Money for jam. It's basically a waste of time and money and a quick "google search" would show you that it's basically pointless and doesn't last real long before it needs a recoat…

But hey, you keep clicking that downvote button if it makes you feel better, because it doesn't make me wrong.

I can't comment on Nanolex but I can comment on Opticoat Pro which I've had applied to my car since new (now almost 3 years old).

    • Longevity is vastly overstated. Mine started to wear off from about 2 years in a few places and lose its water repelling property.
    • Ignore all the BS about protection. The only benefit in my opinion is not having to wax your car and make car washing easier. It won't provide any protection against swirls and water spots. I struggle to understand how they provide warranty against bird dropping damaging your paintwork but supposedly it doesn't protect from water etching marks.
    • I've had mine re-coated under warranty just recently. They did do it but they threw in a comment that it didn't perform to expectation as I didn't look after the car properly. This really bugged me. Yep, assume your product is flawless and assume your customer did something wrong. They have no evidence to show how often my car has been washed and how it's been looked after, yet they make this claim. You say you want to reduce the frequency of washes, but Opticoat will tell you you have to wash it frequently to maintain the coating's performance lol
    • Would I get it again? Probably not. I would still get some sort of paint protection as I just don't have the time to detail my car properly anymore but I would try other products.
    • Thanks for this.

I will get paint protection as I stated I really don't want to wash the car more often than I really have to, but from your experience I might as well do cheap and nasty DIY, and re-do every 3 or 4 years as needed.

Or just not bother after that time.

    • Out of curiosity, how did you maintain your car? What was your washing, drying method? Etc.

      • I used to be a detailing fanatic so I know everything there is to a "proper" carwash.

I'm not as pedantic these days as I don't have the time but my routine usually consists of:
        - a thorough pre-rinse with high pressure hose to remove any surface dirt/sand/etc especially around side skirts, doors, front/rear bumper, wheel arch areas
        - I only use good quality ph neutral carwash and high quality microfibre mitt and I rinse any dirt/grime off the mitt with my high pressure hose after each panel
        - I dry the car by starting off with sheeting the water to get rid of excess water, somtimes use my blower also (not always), then followed by handrying with good quality microfibre towel.

Our 13 year old Corolla has neither.

    Its a burgundy colour

I have had to polish it once in its life, it doesnt get washed all that often, and the shine is still there.

    No accidents

Now the fabric on the back seat tops is faded, so that indicates it has been exposed somewhat to the sun.

Had it since new, and it was built in Japan.

Point being that good paintwork probably doesnt need any extra coating. (its a bargain site, and saving your money is a "bargain")

    • My 13 year old corolla has neither and you would be impressed by how quick I can get dirt on it after a wash lol.

For example I just had it washed last week, and right now I've got dirt streaks everywhere, looks as if I hadn't washed in months.

Given its an old car I really don't give a toss tho.

      • Was it a Japanese made model, or one from South Africa?

The M in L has an early 2004 white, that was built in SA and it needs polishing every 2 years to stop it fading, where as ours a late 2004 was built in Japan and doesn't.

        • Mine's an SA model :S

    • somewhat true but your unwaxed car will look terrible any time it rains as the water will just sit on the paintwork and dry whereas on a car that's been treated with paint protection or wax, the water will simply run off.
i think it's a complete scam to even call it paint protection.

      • That car didn't have paint protection tho.

  • An OzBargainer recommended https://www.amazon.com/Collinite-Liquid-Insulator-Wax-16/dp/…

For the price it would be worth a try. Or what about NuFinish (the once a year car polish)?

    • Collinite seems to need applications quite frequently.

Once a year might be tolerable, so I'll have a look.

  • Used Opticoat twice and in my opinion it is vastly overrated. I get better results from a 6 monthly wax which I apply myself. I have heard great things about Pomponazzi which I will definitely try for my next car

    • Will definitely have a look at Pomponazzi.

Although I must say I'll need to have a look at my friend's Opticoat-ed car again to see how it wears.

  • CQuartz is highly regarded and super popular in Melbourne as well.
