Father's day gift: Acer Aspire S 13 (S5-371T) or Asus Zenbook UX330UA

Hey guys,
Just though I'd get your opinions as I'm having trouble making my mind up. I'm getting my Dad a laptop and he wants something that he can take around to travel so needs to be light and doesn't need to be powerful. I've narrowed it down to two within my budget:

The Acer Aspire S 13 also known as S5-371T:
- Intel Core i5 7200U 2.50ghz
- 8GB RAM
- 256GB SSD
- 13" Full HD
- 1.36kg

$998 12 months warranty - can possibly claim TRS as he is travelling in 3 weeks bringing it down to $898

OR

The Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 (a favourite on these forums)
- Intel Core i5 7200U 2.50ghz
- 8GB RAM
- 256GB SSD
- 13" Full HD
- 1.2kg

Aprox. $908 AUD at the moment but, and this is a big BUT - likely NO WARRANTY

You can see the specs are pretty much the same with the Zenbook being the winner overall due to weight. The Zenbook is the clear winner to me in terms of product, just the look, feel and quality but the no warranty factor has me concerned. The Acer seems sort of cheap but at least will have local warranty.

What would you pick? Anyone have either of these and can share their experiences? Or something else entirely ~$1000?

Comments

  • can't speak for the acer aspire but i own the exact same zenbook. I'm very happy with the laptop and can't really fault it

  • I have a couple of these laptops supplied for work

No problem with Acer so far, but never liked Acer - had 3 previous Acers died right after warranty ended.

I like Asus, but the only problem I have with the Zenbook is the Wi-Fi.
I have 2 personal ones that disconnects frequently if I am connected to cheap routers (Huawei or ones that come free with ADSL2+/NBN subscription).
The ones at work are connected to the 5GHz range, but it always fluctuates between 280-480 Mbps.
But they are still working nonetheless.

Both of these are solid, they even look similar. Cannot go wrong with either one. But I personally avoid Acer…
