I cant be upgrading to a fancy TV anytime soon.
I have two ancient plasmas, one with WDtv and the other running with Kaiser Baas media streamers on them.
No complaints; a fast internet/advanced router makes things palatable.
Kind OzB folks suggest an apt android box?

I had enough of crappy Chinese made Android Boxes and Nvidia Shield is overkill for my uses so in my case, I built my own Android Box using ODroid c2. More details are here:

Chromecast instead?
Guess it depends how much you rely on Kodi's benefits vs pure cloud-based streaming.
My fifth (!!) Chromecast I picked up for $15, after applying The Good Guys concierge and other credits. Very happy with the price/performance, even at RRP.
If you've got a movie collection on a server, then a DLNA 'negotiating' app on your phone to send media straight from server to Chromecast would be handy: e.g. BubbleUPNP
This way, you're not risking a crappy Android TV experience.
Raspberry Pi with KODI.

Xiaomi Mi Box 3, make sure you get the International Edition, not the Chinese one. I put them on all our tvs to run Netflix and Kodi (from qnap nas)
Seconded, got the international one from lightinthebox. Works a treat.
Have an old PS3 or X360? Put plex on it and on the main pc :)
