2TB Desktop HDD

My TV can't handle anything over 2TB apparently, so looking for an external, powered HDD - preferably one that shuts down when it doesn't detect a USB connection (ie when the TV is turned off).

Looking around, it seems 3TB is now the minimum. Any suggestions?

  • buy the hdd external casing each and do it that way try ebay or msy

  • I have a few external cases here, but was hoping to find a unit that shut down (or spun down) the HDD when the TV was off. Do you know of any external cases do that?

EDIT: nvm, found plenty of cases that do spin down the hdd (https://www.umart.com.au/newsite/goods.php?id=35240)

  • Get a 2.5" portable, only powers from the USB so it will power down when TV is off

    • I was using a 2.5" portable, but it died. After some research, the recommendation was to use an externally powered HDD. Not sure if this is necessary though.

        Not necessary at all

What happened to the 4tb from amazon?

    • Yep, I got it, but much to my dismay it doesn't work, possibly due to the 2TB limit.

Investigate the 2tb limit further before you give up. It might work if you use a different cluster size in the formatting, as the limit might actually be a maximum number of addressable clusters.

      • Almost worth looking at a Xiaomi Mi TV instead to play the files, and use the 4tb

I doubt your TV plays every format, or will keep up with the new formats

        • Do you mean replace the whole TV?

        • @ryangus:

Just the media playback capability. Sorry I meant a Xiaomi Mi TV Box 3.

I think you may have mis-understood my intention for the hard-drive. I want to use is it for Time Machine to record live TV.

EDIT: Make that I didn't explain my intention…

        • @ryangus:

          Ah no worries lol :)

        • @Spackbace:
I think I'll just try and move the 4TB on and buy a 3.5" enclosure and 2TB HDD.
