Hungry Jack's Frozen Drinks 33% Portion Shrink

I went to Hungry Jacks and found that now they only fill up to the second to the top rim of the Cup. Confirmed with the Manager on duty that this wasn't a mistake.

When I got home, I measured it out with a Pyrex measuring cup and the previous minimum was 600ml and now it is 400ml.

Pay for a "Large" cup but don't get filled to a large size! It only looks like a little bit but it's actually a lot because the cup is tapered.

For comparison:

7-eleven: Fill up as much as you can fit (including dome), they have even supplied bigger cups for re-use at various times.
McDonalds: Always to the very top or close to.
KFC: Always to the 1st from the top rim.
Coles Express: Fill up as much as you fit (including dome).

Yeah the 'small' one doesn't get filled to the brim like that, but the difference is minor.

  • I always thought it was because the Hungry Jacks lids SUCK! and if you fill it to the dome you're more than likely going to lose the lid and have Frozen Coke through your car.

    • I have never had a Hungry Jack's lid come off which was put on properly

Did you pull out the pyrex cup in front of them? hahaha

It's a hit and miss with McDonald's/KFC/Hungry Jack's. My experiences at those places are not very consistent; sometimes to the very top, sometimes up to the rim only; and no one particular more than the other.

It's also quite deceiving when all the marketing photos (McDonald's, KFC, HJs) show that the contents go above the rim. I would kick up a fuss on principle.

    • They'll be happy to add a bit more ice.

  • Is the HJ on Warrigal Road or Nepean Highway?

The Warrigal Road one hasn't got any of the penny pincher deals on display.

  • Be an ultimate ozbargainer and drink only tap water instead?

  • MacDonald's is much the same, bought one yesterday.

    Hey it's $1

33% longer before you get diabetes

      It's actually 50% longer.

  • I think sometimes they are just lazy, as the machine preset never fills up the cup. The person filling the cup has to press the button again to fill it up. If it is way below the rim, I usually just tell the person and say "That's not full, mate".

    • That's what I did, they were pretty adamant that it was the correct fill to second line, but they said they'd fill it up just as "good will", then came back with it filled it more only to the first line. At that point I parked my car around the front (because I'm not an (profanity) who deliberately holds up the drive thru line) and went in to sus out why they were being so strict about not filling it up properly.

It was definitely a conscience deliberate effort not to fill it to the top of the cup.

      • I guess they messed with the wrong customer. I bet they never expected a customer to pull out the old Pyrex cup. :)

Next time I am there, I will check my drink as well. I have a HJ near me, but I rarely go there because the only thing good there is the Whooper burger.

        • well I don't exactly Carry a Pyrex cup on me, but I was left feeling very perplexed why they would be so strict on what visually appears to be a very insignificant amount (the difference between filling it to the top and filling it to the 1st line, up from the second). I heard something about Tapered Cups being misleading on volume so I wanted to test it out, and went to a bit of trouble to dig out the Pyrex cup from back of the kitchen cupboard.

I was very surprised to say the least that only a few cm from the top of a large looking cup makes such a big difference.

Why else would they care so much if it wasn't about the quantity? If I was a HJ worker and someone complained about it not being full enough for their liking, without realising about it being a big difference to quantity, I'd just fill it to the top (and then even into the Dome to make amends for the underfill, but at least to the top as as minimum) to make the customer happy without making a fuss. They wouldn't even go to the top even though I complained.

It's the going from 2nd line to 1st line but to the Top (and then sticking to their guns in not going any higher) which is is what tipped me off that there's something strange going on.

      • Just keep not accepting it until it's filled to the top.

And if they wont - offer to pay 2/3 the price.

        • The manager took a very hard line on me. Refused to budge.

Report / formal complaint to head office?

          Also ask for a refund.

@lysp: HO is supposed to call me back at some point

        • @The Land of Smeg:

I remember (15+ years ago) some friends complained to McDonalds head office over the size of sundaes which they'd be getting all summer. Manager said it was a certain size. Head office found the store was wrong. Friends got a refund of cost of about 25-30 sundaes, plus a voucher for 20 free (or something ridiculous).

@lysp: I don't want free stuff I just want the size to be right
