What Sheets to Get

Hi guys, looking for some quality sheets.

I like the ones with the cool feeling when you get on them.
I’ve bought a few “Egyptian cotton 1k threadount” ones on ebay but a lot of them differ in quality and i've forgot which ones were the good ones i bought.
My budget is around $80-100 for each sheet set. (Don’t need the fitted sheet just the main flat one and maybe pillow cases, queen size also). Is there anyway I can discern which type of ones are good and which aren’t? Or would be great if someone could link some ebay listings.

Cheers

  • I just get them from places like Adairs when they have a sale - The higher the thread count, the heavier the sheet - So I stay away from 1000 TC coz its like sleeping with someone sitting on u. Usually 500 TC or even 250 TC if they feel good.

  • I like the 500 thread count ones from adairs (the "worlds softest" ones), they feel nice and soft and cool, and I rate them much higher than some of the 1000 thread count ones I've had previously.

Within your budget when on special or you sign up to their loyalty thingo.

  • My coworkers give em to me for free.

    These work for me…

They have that cool feel you're looking for and are incredibly comfortable… I've replaced all of my sheet sets with these.

I buy mine from the Sheridan outlet. They are a little over your budget but hopefully you can afford an extra $40 - I find them to be good quality - never had any issues. I think this is the last set I purchased:

Browse through their site, lots more choices around a similar price range.

I have some Vue Luxe sheets (Myer sells them) from a factory seconds outlet. They're very good quality and they've lasted ages, even the elastic on the fitted sheet is still tight

Linen House make some good stuff too - i'm not sure if they're cheaper?

Also keep in mind that the Thread Count calculation can differ - some dodgy vendors count the left-right AND top-down threads in that count, but most people apparently do it with just a single direction. I.e the dodgy vendors are actually only giving you half what they claim

  • Mine are Sheridan & Linenhouse.

I bought all of my sheet sets & quilt cover sets on sale at Linenhouse in their last big sale a few months ago.

They currently have some sale items.

Don't forget they have a $15 off your first order when you sign up.

  • Best at that price point would be Sheridan or Adairs.

  • Bamboo cotton ones are my go to sheets. They're so soft

    • I tried some bamboo sheets recently, I found them soft, and absorbent too (it was a hot and sticky night).

  • Would you guys say bamboo or egyptian cotton?

Definitely bamboo. However, not all bamboo sheets are equal. I recommend avoiding Eastwind Textiles, Bamboo Bed and Bath are ok, and Ettitude have the best bamboo bedding that I've tried. They've recently started production of a fabric composed of bamboo and recycled coffee, but it's not out yet so I can't offer any feedback. I've pre-ordered a pair of pillow cases for $40 delivered.

One step up from bamboo is linen, and I can recommend Linen Shed although it's not a fabric that feels smooth. That store is quite affordable for linen and they only make the product once you've requested it, so you can customise it to your liking. There's a discount discount code somewhere on this site that's still active (probably LS10).

Another step up is silk, but you're paying big bucks. I've only tried silk pillow cases from an ebay store called Spirits of Vietnam that cost me $33 delivered. I haven't washed them yet, so can't comment on their durability, but it's my favourite fabric so far.

I can't really help with cotton sheets as I only see them as a budget option. Whatever you choose, follow the washing and drying instructions carefully as it makes a big difference. Let me know if you need further info, even if it might be out of your budget.

      • A silk pillowcase is best for keeping your hair shiny and smooth overnight.

      • Hi Kahn,

Pm sent re: ettitude. I'd be keen for a referrer code, thx!

  • Sheridan outlets do sales quite regularly so there are times you can pick up things for under $100. It's just a matter of timing your purchase right.

With 1000TC sheets, is there a actual reason you need that? i.e. health reasons allergies allergies etc. As pointed out above they are heavy and don't breathe quite as well as lesser thread count sheets.

The problem with purchasing from online store is that not all 1000TC sheets are the same. I purchased a few set from eBay and groupon/scoupon deals and they were dreadful to the point we threw them out. The issue is they use crap thin threads or triple count their threads (they count each strand used to create a thread that the goes in to make the sheets)

In my experience I bought a set of 1000ct sheets from Adairs they pilled fairly quickly, in under 6 months. I typically only buy Sheridan.

Herald had a good article early this year talking about thread count myth. Most decent hotels with great sheets don't have insane thread count but the sheets are fantastic. I'm currently on a search for a supplier that does nice sheets are a more affordable price myself. Personally I like to be able to touch and feel the sheet before I purchase them which is making my quest that bit harder.

  • I have 1200 thread count sheets I got on sale, that are so thick they can be used alone in summer as a light blanket, but are really just too hot. My 1000 thread count very similar, but not as heavy, both great for winter. Both sets have lasted over 6 years with zero degradation, and are still thick and strong. 600-800 thread count are lightwieght yet still strong, better for summer, anything less I find a waste of money, as I eventually end up tearing it up for rags. Sheridan is definitely a go-to brand, they keep their colour very well, and come in attractive patterns and colours. I love their Pop! range.
