Local Mechanic Forgot to Use My Groupon Code

Hi all,

My partner bought a groupon voucher for $60 to use on his car (major car servicing) that is valued at $365.

Today, he took his car in and showed the voucher to the mechanic and the guy said it was fine and valid.

He called up today to notify him that the only major problem was the tyers and it was going to be $145 each to replace, he was fine with that and said to go ahead with it.

Upon getting his car, he said the mechanic charged him $475 and he didn't realise (he thought as though there were extra charges and my partner knows nothing about mechanical work etc).

When he noticed, he called the mechanic and asked he can get the refund of $149 (of the difference) but the mechanic said he couldnt do it and instead could give him free servicing on his next scheduled servicing.

My partner just wants the refund to take place, as the groupon voucher was $60 and feels as though he got it for no reason.

I dont know what to say or do myself so just need an opinion. Thanks!

  • How much is "free servicing" worth? Make sure you get that in writing / gift card or something, as they'll probably forget by the next service. If it's worth more than $149, then it's a bargain in 6 months time?

The mechanic will be out of business by the time the next service rolls around. Groupon has a terrible habit of killing off businesses.

    • Free servicing is not free.

The mechanic will just simply up his charges by $149 which is easily done to the not so mechanically minded.

I think the $60 for major service is not include part?

    • It doesn't. The $60 included the oil change/filter etc. Most standard procedures that are included, but parts are seperate.

  • It's far to hard to force them to refund usually.

    'Forgot'

  • Contact Groupon, and tell them the mechanic refused to use the coupon, im sure you can get some kind of recourse.

    • Best case, they'll give you $60 back … you'll still be worse off, than if the mechanic honoured the groupon in the 1st place.

Usually those "cheap" servicing vouchers don't include any parts what-so-ever, so on top of that $60 you have to pay for oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, etc. Those vouchers are usually worth nothing.

I bought a book of those mechanic vouchers once, took the one for a servicing in and said I'd like to use my own oil, got told I can't do that and have to use theirs, the normal mineral that he chargers $60 for but that I can buy myself for $30. And he would buy it for trade price, and by the barrel. So this is how they get the money back for those cheap/free servicing, they charge out the arse for parts.

Email them. Get it in writing that they acknowledged your intention to use the coupon to begin with and the mechanic forgot to apply the coupon. Insist on the refund.

Forgetting to apply the coupon is not a valid excuse to charge more. Free servicing at next scheduled servicing is fine if you know your cars, but knowing nothing about cars, you are setting yourself up for a second dip. If he is honest, its an average deal as $149 is about the price of a regular service. If he is trying to make a quick buck (he said he cannot refund you… that's upright bs, so beware), he is going to tell you spark plugs had to be changed, flushed all brake fluids and replaced brake fluids, alignment is off…

    Get your money back.

    • "Forgetting to apply the coupon is not a valid excuse to charge more" I was thinking this too. Thanks for the advise! I'll pass it on.
