What would you do? Train station car park full.

Say you worked around 40km away from home. To get to work, you drive your car to your local train station, and ride the train to work.

Say you got to the multilevel car park today and every single spot was taken. You don't have time to go back home and find an alternative way to get to work on time.

So you park just outside a bay, like several other cars have done, and expect a fine.

You come home and no surprise, you have been fined. $110.

What would you have done? Parked illegally too? Called work and tell them you'll be late by at least an hour while you figure out another way to get to work? Gone home and called in sick?

    • That's brilliant. Could be hard to convince someone though.

      • Usually it's not too bad, I did the same thing for uni and would normally get one after about 5 houses. Houses with lots of unoccupied driveway space usually say yes :P free money for them.

Many estates and new areas have little to no focus on infrastructure, just build build build (houses). Suddenly you have a train station carpark which is at capacity by 7am and a whole bunch of commuters with nowhere to park. And the nearest train station might not be close, or in the same situation. So people are now waking up 1-2) hours earlier just to get a carpark, or in more extreme cases, moving house to a better location

you know work has consumed you when you think going to your job is more important than your parking

      Your username says it all

      • yawns i knew that someone would think they would be creative and say that.

        • one would assume you made that username to make the sarcastic comment.

At least I hope the comment was meant to be sarcastic and in good humour.

  • I would drive into the city as close as possible to work - park in a 1 hour spot/whatever is available and move the car before time expires, hopefully finding a 4 hr on street park. It's inconvenient and risky, but cheaper than $110. Only works if traffic is moving quickly enough though.

  • Keep driving and use a paid park at work… gotta be cheaper and more convenient than a fine.

  • I would ride my bike to the train station

  • Not just a fine, I believe there's demerit points taken for parking tickets now

  • move to Brisbane. you can buy a decent house within 5km of cbd for less than what a house more than 40km or even 50km costs in Sydney :)

Greenslopes QLD 4km of CBD median $900k. Castle Hill NSW 45km of CBD median… $1.5m?

      but, its queensland

  • Just park further and walk, if you're a bit late explain the situation, take precautions to make sure it doesn't happen again.

    OR

Accept the fine (assuming you can afford it).

  • Get in earlier. If you're in Melbourne and finish your train journey before 7.15am, the ride is free. Yes that is ridiculously early, but for me it's worth getting out of bed 20 minutes earlier.

  • I would have just driven to work in that circumstance. Surely the fuel cost is cheaper than the fine. Unless you really had to be at work on time for a meeting in which case, I probably would have winged it like you as a one off. No way I'll cop $110 just to get to work early if there was no meeting.

I got a motorcycle, it's been bliss ever since

Yep, heaven… Unfortunately I'm an atheist.

    • Likewise

  • Let them know I'll be late and work something else out like parking at another station.

However if I got to the car park late because work wanted me to start late (like they want something else done outside of business hours for whatever reason) and it was full - then I go home and tell them I'm working from home. Because that one isn't my doing.

  • I used to drive to the closest big park to the station, park on the verge and walk the remaining bit ~ 1.5 - 2km. Added maybe an extra 10-15 mins depending if I was rushing or not.

Magpie might shit on your car, dog might pee on your tyres but you don't have to contest a parking spot or wake up extra early for the limited spaces. Also it was free. My traino carpark made you pay a daily fee, not sure about others.

Had a job interview in North Sydney. Drove to my local train station (Canley Vale) - no parking and missed last train. Drove to another station where I thought for sure there'd be parking (Edmonson Park) - no parking and missed the last train. Ended up driving to North Sydney and paying $50 to park in secure parking.

Didn't get the job after all that.

I usually arrive an hour earlier than I have to at the station - then lie back and have a nap for an hour then head off to the train

  • If the train station I go to is full, I keep going along the line (closer to where I want to go) and park there. I use a bit more petrol, but then my train trip is shorter on the way in and on the way out and I know I parked safely and don't get a fine.

  • I used to have this problem when I was living in Ferntree Gully. Boronia was always full, but I could sometimes get a spot at Ringwood if I drove there. Craigieburn just forget about trying to get a spot. Fortunately for Boronia I was within walking distance of the station (~20 minutes), and only used the train when I didn't ride to work. I eventually gave up with public transport and started driving in. From Craigieburn I either ride in or drive to the city.

    • Yeah I heard Craigieburn gets filled up by 6-630am. Drive to Roxburgh Park (filled by 7:15) or Coolaroo (filled by 8:00) instead.

I think you should just ram your car into a bay full of parked cars and get out and just leave the door open like you fled the scene. No one is going to give parking tickets are the scene of a car accident.

  • Amazed that no one has suggested moving…

  • Ride to train station, more economical.

Reading this stuff depresses me. Humans were never meant to live like this. And we're supposedly the lucky ones with jobs in a "1st world" country.

Yet they keep letting more people in. Listen to dick smith

It isn't just about immigration. They keep adding more development but without matching infrastructure in Sydney. More apartment blocks - even the mcmansions have fallen out of favour so you can cram more people in and charge more people for homes. Schools, hospitals, parks, public transport all lag behind and are only brought in through expensive private deals which aren't in the public interest. We're building a slum.

        • Sydney Slums - that's a scary future for the city. Overcrowding, gridlocked transport, exorbitant housing. We're halfway there, just need the formation of more 'poor' ghettos and increased criminal/gang violence. Fortunately the job market still appears strong but times will turn for the worst in the future.

    • Yes, this shouldn't even be posted as an issue. It's depressing when people can't solve the simplest of problems. The OP will probably complain next about not being able to get a park on a Saturday at Westfield.

  • Arrive earlier, it's your local station and you should be aware of when it's full. Either that or park in a nearby street or drive to another station.

There will never be a spot for everyone, parking is limited.

    • then everyone knows when it's full and next time the time gets 5min earlier, then another 5min earlier…within a few months no need to go home, just sleep at work…

      • If that's the case then why hasn't it happened at every train station carpark in Sydney?

  • Train station full? Park at the drive through!

  • This happens to me sometimes. My local station car park fills up by 6:45am.
Best alternative is as some others have said, park a little further from the station in non-restricted residential areas.
Otherwise, pay the $6-7 that local carparks charge for early bird parking. Much cheaper than a fine.

Extra credit answer: Park in one of those Ace Parking etc privately operated car parks and then laugh at whatever fine you find on your windshield.

I really wonder how people survive in the real world with such a lack of simple life skills.

  • Park on the train lines.

  • Please move to Noble Park

  • This thread makes me facepalm.
Is it that difficult to walk for 10 or 15 min? People seem to have become so lazy and unwilling to move these days. (Also referring to people who rather stalk ppl leaving shopping centres to get a closer spot than park 80 steps away).

Wake up earlier to park a few streets away and walk to the station.
