Poll: Best 7-Seater Cars for Big Families under $50,000 in 2017

Moderators at OzBargain have decided to run yearly polls to decide the best products in popular categories that get asked repeatedly in the forum. Our aim is to have a central thread where users can vote on the items, suggest options and also change their vote throughout the year. The polls will end once the year is over.

Question

What is the best 7-Seater Car / SUV under $50K for the year 2017?

Seven seater cars are a great choice for parents who are looking to buy a single car to move the entire family. 7 seater cars typically have an extra row of seats at the rear, allowing you to accommodate extra passengers or cargo.

These can come in two different categories: an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) or an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle)

  • SUV's tend to be sportier and feature a sleekier, modern chassis.

  • MPV's don't look as sporty with their boxy and utilitarian design, but they do deliver where it counts for parents - a roomy interior for both kids and shopping cargo.

Some considerations when choosing a 7-seater

  • Vehicle safety (ANCAP ratings). The ANCAP rating is a five star system (five stars being the safest, one star being the least safe).
  • Fuel economy
  • Two wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All wheel drive vehicles are more expensive, but will provide a better driving experience.
  • On-board entertainment options for keeping the kids entertained and smartphone connectivity, such as Bluetooth, Android Auto, plus Mp3 player compatibility, rear view digital displays and SatNav.
  • Ongoing Maintenance costs

So what's your favourite 7-Seater for the year 2017? Make your suggestions below, and be sure to justify why it's the best account for you.

    • Diesel over petrol

    • what I dislike about this mitsubishi is that the engines are weak

i actually even like the way they look and it seems like you get some decent gear

however the 2.0 2.4 sohc fours arent my cup of tea

i expect more than that in 2017

    • Isn't the Oulander competing in the mid size SUVs segment against CX-5 and Tucson? It's smaller than the other large SUVs.

      • +1

it has a 7 seat option however yes, i would consider it an occasional 7 seater and more a mid sizer

my question would be… why drive a Carnival, for example, if you're not doing 7 seats all the time

its 2 tons, its not the most economic, its expensive.

  • +3
    Suggested Kia Carnival

I'm a fan of the 7 year unlimited km warranty offered by Kia. The 2017 Carnival seems to have pretty decent tech too.

    • This is what I am voting for, except it won't fit into my car port :(

Currently driving a smallish Korean 7-seater.

  • +2
    Suggested Honda Odyssey

Honda Odyssey is one of the more "stylish" looking people mover/vans in my opinion and also has a 5 star ANCAP rating. 3 year/100k warranty is not as good as Kia or Hyundai but Japanese cars tend to have better resale value. 7.6L/100km is a lot better than the larger vans too.

    • Honda for once has upped the warranty period its 5 years and unlimited km now.

    • And its an 8 seater!!

      • Top spec comes in a 7 seater.

        • Yes, but vti is 8 seater.

    • I have Honda Odyssey VTIL. only 7 seater but get the leather seat which is easier for cleaning when you have kids eating in the car.
Only issues i found was tailgate is not auto and US version are much cooler! They have removable middle seat which covert to 7 seats and also auto tailgate. During time of purchase, was the best value compare to other brand.

      • we bought the VTi, then added leather for the seats.
Works better and I believe the quality of the leather is much better than the one from the factory.
        Not to mention it's cheaper.

  • Suggested Hyundai iMAX

Hyundai iMAX is good for those who need lots of space. I often see these used as commercial vans with the back seats removed. 5 year/160k warranty is not bad. I would assume that a 4 cylinder, 4 speed auto of this size is not exactly exhilarating to drive but that's not really a key factor for most people in this market.

    • +1

i used to drive these at work

they are 2.5 litre turbo diesel w/ a 5 spd auto… they drive fine and they blow away bloody subcompact hatches like they are nothing

i believe the newer ones are now 6 spd auto

for a van they drive fine, i reckon they dont drive as nice as VW Caddys but nothing else does

  • Suggested Hyundai Santa Fe

    Hyundai Santa Fe
What we have, only downside is the 6th and 7th seats can be a bit squishy.

    • We have this and I love it. So far we've not used the 3rd row of seats.

  • +1
    Suggested Skoda Kodiaq

    http://www.skoda.com.au/promotions/promotion-detail/kodiaq-p…

Starts at $46,300 driveaway. Comes with 5 yr warranty as well.

  • +1
    Suggested Kia Sorento

    Kia Sorento
-2015 CarsGuide Car of the Year
-Just beaten by the CX-9 in the 2016 Drive Car of Year: Family SUV but Sorento beat CX-9 in this review from Sep 2016 - http://www.themotorreport.com.au/63991/large-suv-lowdown-maz…

  • I dont want to put forward this car as my 'favourite' although by circumstances its what I have… I got an T32 Xtrail 7 seat as a hand me down.

However it has some downsides… its only FWD but I find this to be fine since it'll be a city car for most people.

If you want 4wd then you only get 5 seats.

I find it to be faster than the competition especially any 2.0 car and the 2.4 Mitsubishi however its slow on the hills etc but that's to be expected.

7 seat up I find the power to be fine.

The 2.5 litre engine is PFI so its not the most economic but you need to get a CX5 if you want economy but its only 5 seat.

  • +2

if you're after the cheapest and worst 7 seater on the market…

    https://www.holden.com.au/offers/captiva/my17-captiva-active…

    • +1

Nowdays anyone that wants to buy a craptiva or half of the cars made by Holden (GM), don't need a car, They need a mental health assessment.

      • thats certainly true

i do actually like US cars and the replacement for the captiva has already been announced

The Holden Equinox will be coming soon. Not sure if it has a 7 seat option however I do like the idea of a SUV w/ a 2.0 turbo petrol 180kW/350Nm in fwd or 4wd format.

  • I am currently in same boat as OP.

I am leaning towards to 2017 KIA sorento SI Limited Pack.

  • Kia Has come such a long way. You might not be buying the most luxurious car, but your buying safety, quality and peace of mind.

    7 Years Fixed Price Service
    7 Years Warranty
    7 Years Roadside

Insurance is cheap and sometimes dealers can even do really good finance rates. I currently have a Rio and I'm shocked with the quality and ride. Kia's are also nice to look at (Thanks kindly to Peter Schreyer. The god of design).

  • Suggested Isuzu MU-X 2017

I've been researching the 7 seat 4x4 market and looking at the options… the MUX(same truck as the Holden Trailblaiser) is currently 43,000 drive away.. strangely Holden is 50K!!!

I have been recommended this by friends and mechanics over the Prado, Fortuna and Everest…

  • The poll consists of people movers vs 5+2 suv's.

It would be better to have the people movers vs proper 7 seat suv's such as LR Discovery, Kluger, Pathfinder and CX-9, Everest etc

    • I dont disagree but you're asking a lot for a non professional presentation.

Its up to the potential buyer to cruise carsales and redbook and the manufacturers sites to see if something fits their budget.

I mean the cost range is like $30k to $75k.

      For me I'm not buying a $75k 7 seater.

Also there's a mix of true people movers with no offroad ability, the FWD SUVs with very limited ability, the large monocoque SUVs and the body on frame SUVs.

I note the Landcruiser Patrols and big Pajeros arent here. It seems people dont want the size price and running costs.

  • Diesel, cheapest model for parts/repairs. imo

  • Mazda CX-9

    amazing car

    • Really isn’t an amazing car.

      • -1

        The amazing car.

        • +1

No, a Tesla is an amazing car. A Mclaren is an amazing car. A Mazda is crappy family wagon. It's not even an amazing SUV.

        • @Burnertoasty: you should post it on every comment/recommendation in here.

          Read the question first.

        • -2

@DesiBoy: That has nothing to do with your Mazda bull shit.

  • Suggested Nissan Pathfinder ST-L

    Pathfinder R52
More value for money than Kluger and CX-9

  • Suggested Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

    Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
Except base model which is 5 seater
Top model is so kitted out!

    • I think base model is also a 5-seat. According to Mitsubishi a GLS (cheaper 7-seat model) with white paint and no options still come down at $51,000 RRP.

      • Hey, yes only the base model is 5 seater. GLS and GL are both above 50k but are commonly available for lesser without too much haggling. I agree that technically it is slightly above the price range tho. :)

        • CarAdvice listed MY17 GLS at $48.5k though. Yes OzBargainers never pay RRP anyway :)

  • Suggested Renault Koleos Intens 2017

I've added the new Renault Koleos to the list, Nissan X-Trail drivetrain and platform packaged with much better technology (and somehow a better drive) than an equivalent X-Trail. I found the CVT was calibrated a lot better in the Koleos and the Tesla-copy screen was really intuitive and easy to use. Standard equipment on the Intens model is decent too. Only gripe I have is lack of off-roadability compared to the previous gen, I haven't taken one out off-road but I haven't heard great things from friends that upgraded and did beach and outback driving. On the road though, its a fantastic vehicle, looks good and the 5 year warranty (although not class leading) is a bonus too.

    • Not a seven seater?

      • The salesman said third row seating was an option and I never really looked into it much more than that, but upon further research, you're right, it is only a 5 seater.

  • +1

    Kia Carnival.

Beat 7 years unlimited km warranty & Roadside assist - free.

Go to a Kia dealer and sit in one. You will never look back.

SUV 7 seater are not really good. They don't do anything good, jack of all trades. I have one and it's good to carry 7 people only for short distances or kids in the back, but that's not too safe.

  • I see the Holden Craptiva 7 never made the list, lol

  • FYI, Odyssey is end of model.
Honda Australia are looking at a new Odyssey but no details yet.
I had that messaged to me when I enquired earlier this year :)

    • Bargains Ahoy! end of year is coming surly selling the last model and last years won't look good in 2018
