NBN for a Noob - Service and Device Help Required

Looking to jump from my ADSL service to FttN but I have some questions.

  1. Since everyone is a reseller, does it matter who I pick?

I've been with iiNet for about a decade but their service is so useless I'm thinking of amaysim or TPG to get 25/5 for 70 instead of 80. Assuming similarly average service is there any reason I shouldn't jump ship?

  1. Is ADSL speed an indicator of VDSL speed?

I get about 8000/700 with a few dropouts a day. I'm hoping VDSL will be faster but I'm guessing that given ADSL is average that VDSL will be similar. Is that right?

  1. A modem.

I have a nighthawk router so looking for a modem that'll bridge with maximum stability and doesn't need any wireless capacity. The netgear DM200 seems to have a lot of bad revieww - is there a better alternative?

Thanks!

    1. no, they all have different 'bandwidth'

    2. the copper that goes from node to your house then around and inside your house all the way to your outlet, all remains the same/unchanged for FTTN. so if your copper are shat then it'll still be shit.

    3. dm200 suck. try netcomm NF10W in bridge mode. cost not much more than dm200.

      1. Ahh, ok. So that'll impact congestion and peak usage stuff yeah?

      2. But it'll be 'better' shit right? The VDSL won't max out at the same speed as ADSL, even if it's still not as good as it'd be if the exchange was next door?

      3. Cool! I'll try and find somewhere that sells the nf10w. Seems less common than dm200

        1. yes. some isp oversubs their 'available' bandwidth causing congestion.

        2. most likely able to achieve higher speed than adsl but can't guarantee. best to subs cheapest 12/1 package to check your speed 1st then upgrade to 25/5 if you max your 12mbps line. (provided your isp don't charge fees for upgrading package)

My only advice is this — avoid ISP's that force you into a long term contract (i.e 12 month or 24 month) plans.

Amaysim AFAIK has no contracts, so you could try them and then exit later without having to worry about paying through your nose.
My only concern is that they (probably) oversubscribe users to generate profits but no way of knowing their business model unless you're an Amaysim employee.

No, nodes are in different places (VDSL) to the exchange (ADSL)

    Go with Aussiebroadband

They have a free first month if you mention 'whirlpool'

    Do a search on whirlpool

They are also BLOODY good and have local staff, who know their stuff and actually speak English as a first language

  • Aussie Broadband at Whirltpool

Definitely go with Aussie Broadband if you can, you will not regret it.
