Is Importing Electrical Goods Legal or Illegal?

I want to buy this mini rice cooker http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220V-1-2L-Square-Mini-Electric-Ri…

But I am concerned if by buying am I violating any law or voiding my home insurance (in case something happens with the device)

Edit: I got a normal rice cooker, I want a mini one

If you buy that, border patrol will arrest you and imprison your first born.

But that rice! Maybe worth it. Try hide in shipping container but X-ray problem too

    • +5

That's nothing, in the US they also taze every one a 10km radius and shoot every dog within 20km.

One you are dead they'll tell you to stop resisting and comply.

that's not a tiger. do yourself a favour and buy a tiger.

      Or Zojirushi. ;)

      • Or Toshiba with a forged pot :P

You can import but you're not allowed to plug it in.

Well, you can plug it in but if it burns your house down you have more problems than just losing all your stuff.

For the legal stuff see here: http://www.saaapprovals.com.au/frequently-asked-questions/ & here: http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/Businesses/Product_saf…

Basically anything you import needs to have an SAA approval. You can buy it and use it, but without the approval any problems it causes are on you, your insurance is voided etc.

    • +11

This is often repeated on this site, but is not true. Read the link you posted. The restrictions only apply if you want to sell the imported items.

      • You can import it and use it just fine, but if it burns your house down the insurer may not cover it.

It's up to you to prove the device was safe, best way is to find someone else selling it who got the approvals done.

      • Anything electrical also plugged into the telephone network must be certified for understandable, zappy reasons.

    • +3

saa approval is nothing more than easy money for the cartel.

most of tiger items are made in japan. one can buy any tiger items from any where in world that uses 230v 50hz, and use it here.

isn't it cheaper to buy a rice cooker from an australian store?

  • Considering there are deals for rice cookers for less than $15 delivered every few months here on ozbargain….

    • I think he is after a tiny one

    • I already have a 5 cup one. I want a 1 cup one

      • +7

So that you don't have to share! Smart. :)

        • Less stuff to clean and I like the portability of the device.

      • Well put less rice and water in the 5 cup one. OMG! Thats what everyone else does around here

  • Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322350883905

Slightly smaller, cheaper has 2 layers and is in Aus already meaning it has to meet our electrical codes.

and is in Aus already meaning it has to meet our electrical codes.

Nah, plenty of non certified crap being sold, like the USB charger that killed a woman a while back.

The difference there is if your house does burn down because if it, then it becomes the retailers problem, not yours.

      • like the USB charger that killed a woman a while back.

she was allegedly killed by a usb charger.

the coroner hasn't released their report to her death.

Eh, they'll get around to it.

Given the crackdown on dodgy chargers that happened shortly afterwards, I wouldn't bet against it being the cause.

I'm pretty sure it is your problem if your house burns down

don't be so sure. this item uses an iec c13. that could mean that the cord is good for use here, but not the item. the item being sold with the iec may fool many buyers.

I always thought you were suppose to use the C15 (?) cords with kitchen stuff. Aka 'kettle cords', the high temp ones with the notch.

        • this item is rated at 200w. i can't imagine it cooking anything at 200w.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322350883905
          Speicifications:
          Material:Stainless steel liner+plastic
          Voltage:200V~50Hz
          Rate power:200w
          Capacity:1.0L

          the voltage is also wrong.

@whooah1979: Lol, my PC cooks stuff better than that.

        • yeah, then again, toasters, jaffle makers, cordless kettles don't have them.

        • @PVA: I'm not enthusiastic enough to check the ratings on my cordless kettle, but I do know my Aldi pressure cooker uses a 'normal' IEC cord, and that must be rated at 1000W or so. Not considered hot enough, I guess.

I wonder if kettles still use 'kettle cords', I haven't had one that wasn't cordless for ages.

        • @D C: yeah, even cheap $10 kettles are cordless now. One of the best kitchen inventions/improvements I think, a tiny thing you don't think about but super useful.

    • Seller location is in Hong Kong.

    • I saw this rice cooker, but i dont like it. You have to put water outside the container to warm up, while the one I posted it exactly like a normal rice cooker

    • +1

I assume that is bigger than what OP is after.

  • +1

Cook the rice in advance in current rice cooker. Split rice into separate containers and freeze. Microwave when you want rice. Done.

Your can get a Tiger brand electric rice cooker in Cabramatta or Cinatown in Sydney, or Target and Binlee (don't forget to ask for warranty card), shoild not buy anything straight from overseas especially from China, they used 220V, Australia used 240V but market too small for China to special manufacture thing for Oceania, again, to avoid house burn down, you should not use any electricity and gas things including phone charger, just eat ouside and used all low voltage solar lights at home.

  • I bought a 3-cup Cuckoo rice cooker from eBay some years back. Love it! Small compact pretty and keep rice warm without drying. I see that shops here are selling them now. Check it out!

All electrical goods sold by the AU retailers like Harvey, good Guys, JB Hi fi, Myer, Djs, etc have passed ISO and Standard tests.
China will make 40,000 types of electrical rice cookers but only a handful are safe enough to use.
Don't risk it to save $5 or so, buy it locally

    • Most of the rice cookers sold in AU are made in China. Most of the rice cooker made by China or sold in China are safe to use. Buy brand you can trust and use it safely.

    • I want a small one.

  • Not ilegal.
