Car Rental in Canada (Ontario) - Your Experience?

Need a car for Xmas in Canada, but am frustrated by how hard it is to get legitimate quotes.

The main problem is that in Canada, the "headline rate" - only $11.95 per day - is blown out by the compulsory CDW which can be any amount, like $39.95 per day.

But most rental comparison sites just leave this off entirely and cover themselves by saying "additional local charges and fees may apply".

Previous trips I've used a little local guy who I know, but he's retired…

I'd appreciate any anecdotes, gotchas, tips etc that you have from your experience.

(Preferably actual recent Ontario rental experience)

  • I recently booked a car from https://www.economybookings.com/ for an upcoming trip to Vancouver - they include free CDW. Beware the quoted price is in AUD but you pay in Euros, so make sure you use Citi or Macquarie etc for payment.

  • Its Canada/USA….. The price you see is never the price you pay. Its always plus plus plus…..

  • You can buy separate CDW to cover you for your trip and it's usually cheaper than buying it in Canada/USA, and can cover a variety of bookings. The car companies make a lot off the extra cover so they will try to sell you it and tell you it's not adequate cover, but it is - I've even claimed on it without a problem. In LAX especially I think the counter staff make a commission off it so they will be real jerks about it but just stand firm and smile and say you've got it covered.

Just google car rental insurance or something like that. A lot of them are based in UK.
