Recommend Me a Cheap Phone for Work

I have had a corporate phone for email for years and years. I receive hundreds of work emails per day. My employer is moving to a BYOD policy using good. I have a separate personal phone (S8) and for numerous reasons would like to keep my work separate from my personal phone.

So, I am planning to buy a cheap android phone to use for work. It will basically only be used for data. Good and maybe some other basic apps. I plan to connect with Vodafone given I travel a lot and the $5 roaming is appealing.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking an Oppo or even a new Nokia. It would be a bonus if just under $300 (faster tax write off).

Thanks in advance

It's surprising convenient only carrying 1 phone around. Good for enterprise does a decent job of keeping your personal stuff and work stuff separate. There's some annoyances, but it's an improvement over carrying 2 phones.

Consider a tablet instead, eg ipad mini … at least you're not doubling up on devices

Surprised your employer isn't allowing you to salary package it.

In my experience, the kind of good enterprise that offers BYO device, also has a rather ill defined, all encompassing acceptable use policy.

I'm no longer young enough to have to worry about the wilder stuff, but I'm still not willing to put myself in a position where a personal email, voice conversation, or browsing session on a company supplied connection may be called into question.

What are you talking about? The app on the phone is called "Good for Enterpise". It allows you to access corporate resources in a sandbox environment.

It's friday night, I can only assume you've had a few drinks.

The thread is about BYOD. You supply the phone and connection. The company supplies a sand-boxed application.

Yes - you could probably still send a nude selfie to your entire company, but I'd say that's a pretty low risk compared to carrying around 2 devices. If it's a high risk scenario for you and you feel that 2 devices mitigates that risk, then by all means carry 2 devices.

LOL… Not all BYOD schemes are that small-time.

Three of my last four clients' BYOD arrangements went well beyond that. One actively encouraged permanent staff to port their personal phone numbers over onto the company SIM. They picked up the bill and spun the personal use side of the deal as a "corporate benefit".

I guess that apps like "Good for Enterpise" [sic] make sense if all they need you to do is check email and work calendar, but the OP's data-only requirements go beyond that, then my point remains… if they own the connection, acceptable use is pretty much whatever they decide it to be.

Personally, my advice to anyone offered one of these supposedly better BOYD arrangements is: sure, use your device of choice, but it should be a separate work-only device. There are many, many upsides that outweigh the downside of carrying two devices, the least of which is the simple fact that you can leave a separate work phone behind when you're off the clock.

I never heard of that, so I'll take your word for it. It sounds like a silly arrangement. I can just see the company having a hissy-fit when you leave and want to keep your number.

Currently around 170 aud and is a great phone with flagship specs. I have been loving mine!

  • Does your employer compensate you for using your own device?

    • Unfortunately not

      • This is something i do not understand. I go to work in the morning and go home at night any expenses incurred for work in those hours are paid for by my employer or they do not and will not happen.(The only reason i use my phone for work is to tell them i will not be in today)

  • lg phones like the LG G4. Due to the lack of popularity and the potential bootloop issues, the prices of any/most LG phones are dirt cheap when compared to Samsung.
