Good Non-Smudging Pen (for a Lefty)

Unfortunately I am cursed with being a lefty, so finding a good pen is a bit of a challenge. I'm looking for a pen that has the following qualities:

Good quality build/ink
Not overly expensive
Non-smudging + smooth ink

I have to make entries into medical notes, which is why the ink cannot be smudgable but still needs to be smooth so it is fast and easy to get the information down. Also, pens tend to go missing quite often whilst rushing around, so I don't want it to be too expensive (but paying a premium isn't out of the question - just not a big one).

I saw the Xiaomi pen pop up here a couple times, and whilst the price is decent (even at full price) it apparently smudges, and has a fine point which makes fast writing difficult and can damage the paper.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Why don't you ask your master?? : Satan!

    Jibes aside

My wife liked kilometrico but their ink has changed and doesn't dry as fast. Bic 4 colour pens have done well.

I'm curious as to how the xiaomi pens fair.

Why don't you ask your master?? : Satan!

The nuns should have beaten the sickness out of him as a child. The quality of education is sorely lacking these days.

Bic 4 colour pens have done well

I generally find Bic pens to be terrible and avoid them.

It's been a while since I come across a pen that smudged (luck maybe), I've found that the cheaper the pen (ie free promo ones) the better. Unfortunately I like felt pens…

    • I found Xiaomi pens smudge quite a bit. More so than Bic etc.

  • Haven't used the xiaomi pens but I am definitely looking for a non smudging pen also.

I currently use the Artline Flow 4 colour and that seems to do the job enough, but when I am just wanting the one colour, light, cheap pen I stick with Staedtler's stick 430 M

As a lefty, I have found some ways around this. You can buy some expensive pen that will dry quickly or you can change the way you write so that your left hand doesn't rest on the words that you have written. My notebook is usually sideways when I write. I admit that it is at a weird angle and looks very weird but it works with any pen.

I use a Parker Segoiva, but I'm not sure if it's suitable for a lefty, as I consider myself more conservative-right leaning. Best of luck.

The spray can is the instrument of choice for the more radical left.

  • BIC reaction gel pens are the best I've used, but unfortunately they don't make them anymore and can't be found in Australia. You can buy them online but the shipping might make it a tad expensive. They've got fast drying ink and a spring loaded barrel so you don't rip through pages if you press down too hard.

      • Yes!!! Omg you found some!

        • Know of any lefty experiences with this pen?

          I may place an order

@Strahany: I'm a lefty myself. I've been using that particular type of pen since 2010. When I found out they stopped making them, I ordered 48 pens and 96 refills which should last me until my death.

It's by far the best pen I've used. It's smooth, the ink dries fast and the springy tip makes writing long pages a breeze.

  • Mitsubishi Power Tank pens - I think by Uniball

    Lefties unite!

I swear by the Xiaomi pens, they're beautiful to write with and don't smudge for leftie

  • In terms of writing experience (outside of fountain pens), nothing beats Pilot's G series (the G-1, for example). I'm a leftie, and have no problems with them.

i can go lefties and righties. maybe try that too

  • Maybe a stupid suggestion but can you use a pencil?

    • Unlikely for medical notes…

      • Yeah I thought that after I posted.

    Thanks for the response everyone!

If the posties could see inside my mail, they'd be wondering why I'll have this random assortment of pens arriving to my door shortly.

If they're nosy, I'll just get ol' mate Satan to deal with them ;)
