Locked NBN Modem (TPG Issued)

Hi everyone,

just porting away from tpg and have their modem Netcomm N300 WiFi Gigabit Router / NF7 - apparently, when I spoke to the rep today they said that the modem is locked to their network.

I wasn't aware of this.

Is there any way to 'unlock' - or maybe reset the router so that I can use it with another provider?

I thought maybe doing a factory reset as per instructions: http://support.netcommwireless.com/sites/default/files/NF7-U…

via IP management, 192.168.20.1 should do it?

anyone experience this or know if it will work or have any info?!

thanks
-Erik

Locked modem? That's news to me (except for mobile broadband modems).
    That's not a modem, it's a router only.

I think they're just talking crap. There should be no reason that you cannot use that router on another ISP.

Can you log onto the modem's web interface? Also what type of NBN do you have?
You may have to change some WAN settings if it came preconfigured for TPG.

    • thanks for the quick reply - yeah i questioned them when they said 'modem' but thought i would post it as they mentioned it.

i didnt think it would an issue at all, but the details would be needed to setup correctly for the next isp i plan on going to.

Old connection was 100/40 but recently moved so still trying to shop around for a decent similar plan that wont rape my bank account - was looking at myrepublic / buzz telco / tpg, optus, telstra all want too much.

i havent tried logging in just yet but will attempt tonight to see if a reset does the trick.

im pretty sure login for the unit is admin/admin

I assume this is FTTP NBN?

If so, I don't think any settings are needed to be changed. You should simply have your NBN connection ISP changed, and then the router should work fine as it was.

        • I've been told the new connection is going to be FTTB/FTTN - connection and activation can take up to 10-12 days… which is a bummer but I will work with it.

@eriklee: Oh my bad. I incorrectly assumed you were already on an NBN connection.
Unfortunately, for FTTB or FTTN, you need a VDSL compatible modem. Unlike the other forms of NBN, NBNCo doesn't install anything in your house which you plug into. It's like the old ADSL connections, where you have to plug a modem into your phone line.

You'll need to look at buying a VDSL2 modem router:
          https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

        • oh, nice thanks for the linkage - I guess I will have to spring for a modem.

thanks for taking the time to assist.

        • @eriklee:

I checked the router last night and its a Netcomm NF12 - definitely worked on TPG

but according to that link you posted to 'working' routers/modems its not listed there at all…

no idea if its even worth troubleshooting with another provider or springing for a new modem that the provider has already configured.

@eriklee: You'll be able to use that as a wireless router, but you'll need a VDSL2 modem to connect to that.

You're better off just spending a bit more, getting a good VDSL2 modem router with Wireless AC.

        • @DogGunn:

yeah was leaning that way mate - thanks again the help!

Yeah, not locked, but not compatible.

As DogGunn said, you need a VDSL compatible modem.

I changed from TPG to Aussiebroadband, and the TPG issued router refuses to run smoothly on the new ISP. Dropouts, lag spikes etc.

    Strange.

    • Just signed up a plan at Aussiebroadband however planning to buy a Modem/Router from gumtree seller who is selling TPG issued brand new… would you not recommend that mate?
