Securing and Driving with an Open Boot in NSW

Hi,

I have a Toyota 2015 Corolla and need to pick up 4 passengers from Sydney Airport and each have a large suitcase. I'm pretty sure the boot won't fit all the suitcases, without it being open. I was wondering how you would secure an open boot like that, and what are the laws in NSW around it?

maybe put the passengers in the seats and just the suitcases in the boot.

and then secure the boot lid with rope

    • And do a good job to avoid the unsecured load fine.

Poking out of the boot can be illegal as well, but only when it cause a problem though (hit someone etc).

    • I find the police don't like it when I put my passengers in the boot - not sure why

      • That would be because your passengers are not wearing seatbelts?

      • Because you forgot the gags.

  • Perhaps think about doing a car swap for the day with a friend/relative with a bigger car?

I would stick some of the passengers on the train, in an Uber or hire a car.

    Cheaper than the fine http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/offences-penalt…

Much easier than hanging out in the airport carport playing tetris with your car and trying to cover the load properly.

    • drive some passengers to Wolli creek station to get the train that will save the high ticket airport price.

Spend $8 and rent a bigger car for an hour www.hertz247.com.au

    • How'd you get $8? Cheapest car on their website is $9.9/hour. I'd imagine you want the SUV ($11.90) or Van ($14.90) and 1 hour doesn't go very far with an airport pickup. Probably need 2 hour minimum … at which point you might as well spring for a train ticket or Uber.

Edit: looks like flexicar rates are even more expensive… $13.50/hour on the intro plan.

  • It is not worth the risk. Find another means of transport.

It is dangerous and illegal for one major reason.

Your boot/hatch seal is ineffective if it's open, although we do see people do this, this is one reason people get sick, crash & or die. The exhaust fumes are not friendly, they love an opening at the back to be sucked in to silently kill you.

Roadworthy Laws state any opportunity for exhaust fumes to be sucked in through any fault (rust holes/broken glass etc), failure (seals/latches/catches etc) or open boot/hatch etc behind the the rearmost side door or window opening is a fail.

Worst case scenario. You get sick and crash - all dying possibly taking out other innocent people. Best case, you might end up on the side of the road with the Police writing tickets for you and stranding either passengers and or bags waiting for your return trip.
